{"id":110211,"date":"2026-06-10T13:05:37","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T17:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=110211"},"modified":"2026-06-10T18:35:24","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T22:35:24","slug":"wardrobe-experience-leaves-dramatic-arts-grad-on-pins-and-needles-in-the-best-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/06\/wardrobe-experience-leaves-dramatic-arts-grad-on-pins-and-needles-in-the-best-way\/","title":{"rendered":"Wardrobe experience leaves Dramatic Arts grad on pins and needles \u2014 in the best way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nav Brar found an unexpected new passion woven into the fabric of his Brock University experience.<\/p>\n<p>Though he\u2019s had a lifelong love for the stage, the Dramatic Arts (DART) graduate wasn\u2019t sure where his academic path would lead when he first arrived at Brock \u2014 that is, until he stepped into Wardrobe at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA).<\/p>\n<p>Now, Brar is forging ahead with purpose after earning his degree and being honoured with the 2026 Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts Textile Award at Brock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/06\/student-success-at-heart-of-next-weeks-convocation-celebrations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">119th Convocation<\/a> on Wednesday, June 10.<\/p>\n<p>Always more focused on acting and writing, Brar had never pictured himself in theatre production. Then came his a first-year DART production course, which ignited his passion for fabric and materials.<\/p>\n<p>In his third year, he landed the role of Assistant Head of Wardrobe, learning from and working with DART\u2019s Head of Wardrobe Bobbi Pidduck on the School\u2019s theatre performances.<\/p>\n<p>Brar quickly picked up sewing, cutting and minor pattern drafting, all integral skills for professional costume designers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_110254\" style=\"width: 409px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/NavBrar-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110254\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-110254\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/NavBrar-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A man in a Convocation gown walks across the stage at graduation.\" width=\"399\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-110254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dramatic Arts graduate Nav Brar discovered his passion for wardrobe and costume design at Brock\u2019s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, where he contributed his skills to creating costumes for performances.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cSomehow, working with my hands and envisioning the final product, it was easy for me to understand what I needed to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>For Brar, the beauty is in the challenge of the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s envisioning the design, what you need to make, figuring out the math and then figuring out what the steps are,\u201d he said. \u201cSometimes we build a simple T-shirt, and sometimes we work on hugely technical garments with lots of specifications to fit the production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working alongside Pidduck on mainstage productions, including <em><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/02\/brock-to-make-splash-with-metamorphoses-mainstage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metamorphoses<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/11\/metis-nutcracker-classic-winter-tale-reimagined-in-celebration-of-indigenous-identity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u00e9tis Nutcracker<\/a>,<\/em> was a transformative experience for Brar as he developed his design and dressing skills, bringing two-dimensional designs to three-dimensional life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the actor puts on the costume and performs on stage, you see it all come together,\u201d he said. \u201cIt&#8217;s a very exhilarating experience to see something you&#8217;ve made or created give the desired effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the curtain closes on each production, Brar is driven to keep creating, knowing he has contributed to enhancing the audience experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s incredibly meaningful and fulfilling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNav has been dedicated to his work, seeking to learn as many skills as possible and consistently improving with each new project, continuously navigating challenges with grace and humour that earned the respect of his peers and instructors at DART,\u201d Pidduck said.<\/p>\n<p>From student peers to faculty, Brar said the support of the close-knit DART community sets the stage for students to grow and thrive in their academic and creative endeavours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of our professors and instructors are so kind. They are all talented theatre professionals and so willing to share their knowledge with students as we develop our own creative voices,\u201d he said. \u201cThe opportunity to create in such a stunning facility has truly been a golden experience for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_110213\" style=\"width: 416px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Metis-Nutcracker-Costumes-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110213\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-110213\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Metis-Nutcracker-Costumes-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Actors perform on stage wearing colourful costumes.\" width=\"406\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-110213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nav Brar built dynamic costumes for the Dramatic Arts mainstage productions including M\u00e9tis Nutcracker written by award-winning Canadian playwright and Assistant Professor Matthew MacKenzie.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Marilyn I.
