{"id":109638,"date":"2026-05-12T17:02:05","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T21:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=109638"},"modified":"2026-05-13T09:51:41","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T13:51:41","slug":"brock-grad-leading-the-way-in-canadas-water-conservation-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/05\/brock-grad-leading-the-way-in-canadas-water-conservation-efforts\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock grad leading the way in Canada\u2019s water conservation efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Fisher\u2019s (BSc &#8217;96) time at Brock University brought with it a depth of knowledge that has served him well as he developed his career in water conservancy.<\/p>\n<p>The President of Canada Water Agency, and proud Brock graduate, reflected on how the University helped to shape his path while visiting campus last month to share insight into his work and learn about Brock\u2019s ongoing sustainability efforts.<\/p>\n<p>From a young age, Fisher found himself drawn to the natural world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always felt a visceral connection to the outdoors,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m more at ease and alive when I\u2019m in outdoor spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the path from passion to profession wasn\u2019t always clear.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, Fisher said he \u201cnever thought in a million years that my career trajectory would have gone the way it has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it all began in Brock\u2019s Earth Sciences program.<\/p>\n<p>Fisher\u2019s Brock studies taught him to \u201cthink in the broadest sense possible,\u201d he said, pointing to the interdisciplinary approach and lab-based learning that grounded his early training.<\/p>\n<p>The experience helped shape how he approaches complex problems \u2014 key to his work in freshwater policy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_109640\" style=\"width: 587px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/MF2-copy-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109640\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-109640\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/MF2-copy-1050x591.jpg\" alt=\"A group of people standing by the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre sign.\" width=\"577\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-109640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark Fisher (BSc &#8217;96) shared insights from his career in water conservation during a recent visit to campus, where he also learned about Brock\u2019s ongoing sustainability while meeting with faculty members in the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really about bringing together diverse perspectives and interests to understand different aspects of a problem,\u201d he said. \u201cAddressing the challenges of population growth, climate change and competing pressures on water quality and availability requires co-ordination across governments, sectors and disciplines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The foundation he built at Brock parlayed into a career spanning federal government, international policy and the non-profit sector, culminating in his current role at Canada Water Agency \u2014 a federal agency dedicated to keeping the country\u2019s water safe, clean and well-managed for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Fisher\u2019s appointment as President came in March 2025, following more than a decade as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council of the Great Lakes Region, where he oversaw both Canadian and U.S. operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of that experience has been foundational to the work that I\u2019m doing now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Central to that work is dispelling a myth around the abundance of freshwater in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>While the country is often associated with vast freshwater resources, \u201conly seven per cent of that is considered renewable and reusable,\u201d Fisher said, and much of it is not located where the demand is highest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA more challenging water future is unfolding in Canada \u2014 and around the world \u2014 that will impact the health of life-sustain freshwater ecosystems and our long-term well-being and prosperity if unaddressed,\u201d added Fisher. \u201cI\u2019m honoured to be leading the new Canada Water Agency at this important time to ensure fresh water in Canada is safe, clean and well-managed, today and for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fisher brought his expertise back to campus on March 10, when he met with faculty in the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre as well as University leadership.
