{"id":109318,"date":"2026-04-27T13:40:33","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T17:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=109318"},"modified":"2026-04-27T13:40:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T17:40:33","slug":"brock-to-mark-national-day-of-mourning-on-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/04\/brock-to-mark-national-day-of-mourning-on-tuesday\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock to mark National Day of Mourning on Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Brock community will honour workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to workplace hazards by marking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccohs.ca\/events\/mourning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Day of Mourning<\/a> on Tuesday, April 28.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s flags will be lowered to half-mast for the annual day of remembrance, and members of the Brock community are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn this National Day of Mourning, we pause to remember those whose lives were changed forever and recommit ourselves to building safer workplaces for all,\u201d says Director of Health, Safety and Wellness James Iseghayan.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Association of Workers\u2019 Compensation Boards of Canada, there were 1,057 workplace fatalities and 274,022 accepted claims for time lost due to workplace injuries or illnesses in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>To report an injury, incident, near miss or safety hazard at Brock, community members can complete an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.sharepoint.com\/human-resources\/SitePages\/Health-Safety-and-Wellness.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">injury\/incident report<\/a>\u00a0or notify a supervisor or Brock employee.
