{"id":108882,"date":"2026-04-07T17:30:40","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T21:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=108882"},"modified":"2026-04-07T17:30:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T21:30:40","slug":"leading-the-charge-to-raise-funds-for-local-cancer-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/04\/leading-the-charge-to-raise-funds-for-local-cancer-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Leading the charge to raise funds for local cancer care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock community members are stepping up to support cancer patients and their families across Niagara.<\/p>\n<p>The University will host the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rankincancerrun.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rankin Cancer Run<\/a> on Saturday, May 23.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_108884\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108884\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-108884\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/BFit_44-copy-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A woman stands beside workout equipment in a gym.\" width=\"354\" height=\"236\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-108884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock Functional Inclusive Training Centre (Bfit) Manager Ally Fast (BKin \u201912) is co-captain of the Brock team for the upcoming Rankin Cancer Run, which takes place at the University on Saturday, May 23.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Leading the Brock team this year are proud graduates Ally Fast (BKin \u201912) and Crispin Bottomley (BA \u201904, BEd \u201905), who also helped organize the 2024 run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, we have a prime opportunity to show the Niagara community that Brock is &#8216;all in&#8217; for local cancer care,\u201d says Bottomley, adding that 100 per cent of the funds raised stay right here in Niagara.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by Brock alumna Mary Ann Edwards (BPhEd \u201976, BEd \u201977), the annual event has raised more than $13.6 million for local cancer care organizations since 2006, including the Walker Family Cancer Centre, Wellspring Niagara, Hospice Niagara, Ronald McDonald House\/Marotta Family Hospital and several local hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best part of Niagara is the community support, and the Rankin Run is an opportunity for Brock to give back to a community that has always supported us,&#8221; says Fast. &#8220;It truly represents what it means to be a part of the University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bottomley and Fast are encouraging \u00a0Brock employees, students and graduates to participate in the event by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.rankincancerrun.com\/register-participant\/set-registration-path\/path\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Registering<\/a> to walk or run with the Brock University team.<\/li>\n<li>Pledging to sponsor a participant.<\/li>\n<li>Making an online donation to the Brock team on the <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.rankincancerrun.com\/donate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rankin Run website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/326163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Signing up to volunteer<\/a> before or during the event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To join the Brock team, <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.rankincancerrun.com\/register-participant\/find-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">register as a team member<\/a> and enter Brock University as the team name.
