To read other EDI Changemaker features or learn more about the series, visit <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/tag\/edi-changemaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Brock News<\/em><\/a><em> or the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/human-rights\/main\/edi-changemaker-of-the-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Office of Human Rights and Equity website<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/in-focus\/pride-takes-space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loud and Proud<\/a> opened at Brock University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/health-wellness-accessibility\/student-health\/wellness-programs\/the-wellness-hub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wellness HUB<\/a> this fall, Brayden Peremesko and J Silvestri said the milestone moment symbolized a more inclusive future ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really emotional when we had the opening; I remember getting choked up,\u201d said Peremesko, Loud and Proud Lead and Founder. \u201cSeeing a queer-designated space have support from community, and Brock acknowledge it as something that&#8217;s needed and has value, is really awesome because that isn&#8217;t something that I grew up experiencing in my past as someone who personally identifies as gay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silvestri, Designated Volunteer of Loud and Proud, said they \u201clove seeing the change this represents,\u201d in terms of institutions taking actionable steps to advance equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEDI is about educating yourself about the experiences of different groups, communities, cultures and people,\u201d they said. \u201cLoud and Proud has already accomplished so much and having others recognize that impact is incredibly meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second-year Nursing students, who also provide peer-to-peer support at the Wellness HUB, drove the development of Loud and Proud. The weekly drop-in space provides free health and wellness programming and services to meet the needs of the queer community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially in today&#8217;s political climate, having a safe space where you can show up as your true self without hesitation really matters and is something that many people can benefit from,\u201d said Peremesko. \u201cStudies show that if someone can show up as their true self, depression rates are reduced and risks of suicide are much lower.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_108849\" style=\"width: 374px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108849\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-108849\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EDI2-1050x615.jpg\" alt=\"Two people pose for a photo in a busy room.\" width=\"364\" height=\"213\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-108849\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Second-year Nursing students Brayden Peremesko (left) and J Silvestri at the Loud and Proud launch last October.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Silvestri, who identifies as non-binary and has been on their own journey of self-discovery, emphasized the value of being accepted while figuring out who they are and where they stand in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also see how doing this work connects to my future profession,\u201d Silvestri said. \u201cBeing a trans individual in nursing, I see patient care differently; I want to make sure my patient is comfortable physically as well as doing other things to show that I support them and their identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pair also stressed the importance of advocacy and allyship \u2014 extending gratitude to Julie Fennell and Bobbie McGhee, Health Promotion Educators in Brock\u2019s Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre \u2014 for helping bring the space to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrayden and J have been incredible in leading the Loud and Proud HUB, creating a welcoming, peer-to-peer space where 2SLGBTQIA+ students can feel supported and connected,\u201d Fennell said. \u201cThey also played a key role in both Pride Month opening ceremonies and Trans Day of Visibility, helping with planning and speaking, and really showing their commitment to making campus more inclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silvestri and Peremesko are excited to deepen collaborations between groups across campus in the future.
