{"id":10881,"date":"2011-06-29T15:20:05","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T20:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=10881"},"modified":"2011-06-29T15:29:46","modified_gmt":"2011-06-29T20:29:46","slug":"on-campus-owl-tangles-with-lacrosse-net","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2011\/06\/on-campus-owl-tangles-with-lacrosse-net\/","title":{"rendered":"On-campus owl tangles with lacrosse net"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_10882\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10882\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10882 \" title=\"The owl rescued from a Brock University lacrosse net\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/owlbrock-001.jpg\" alt=\"This peturbed owl was photographed shortly after being rescued from a lacrosse net at Brock.\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This perturbed owl was photographed seconds after being rescued from a lacrosse net at Brock.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/campus-security\" target=\"_blank\">Campus Security<\/a> and the local humane society pulled a rescue effort this week when an owl got stuck in a piece of sports equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Two commissionaires were patrolling the Zone 2 parking lot around 1 p.m. Monday afternoon when they found a Great Horned Owl tangled in a lacrosse net, said Donna Moody, director of Campus Security.<\/p>\n<p>The Lincoln County Humane Society was called to help untangle the owl, who Campus Security staff have been referring to as Oliver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get regular calls about the wildlife we share our campus with,\u201d Moody said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had calls about coyotes, rats, cats and raccoons, but we\u2019ve never had one about a Great Horned Owl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was nice that we were able to save him and send him home to his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Great Horned Owl is one of Canada&#8217;s largest birds of prey, with female wingspans averaging about 1.2 metres.<\/p>\n<p>The owl is likely a Niagara native.
