{"id":107337,"date":"2026-01-29T14:55:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T19:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=107337"},"modified":"2026-01-29T16:36:56","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T21:36:56","slug":"basketball-star-honoured-for-academic-achievements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/01\/basketball-star-honoured-for-academic-achievements\/","title":{"rendered":"Basketball star honoured for academic achievements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Madalyn Weinert\u2019s success on the court and in the classroom has earned her national recognition.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth-year Medical Sciences student is one of four female athletes across Canada to be named a U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian for the 2024-25 season \u2014 making her the second Badger and first female student-athlete at Brock to receive the award.<\/p>\n<p>Weinert said she hopes the award inspires younger students to pursue their academic and athletic goals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_107341\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/WBB.JAN_.24-73.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107341\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-107341\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/WBB.JAN_.24-73-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A young woman in a basketball uniform runs onto a basketball court with team members around her.\" width=\"354\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-107341\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fifth-year Medical Sciences student Madalyn Weinert (centre), a member of the Brock women\u2019s basketball team, has been named a U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian for the 2024-25 season.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBeing named a U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian is proof that you can do both,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can commit fully to not only being a high-level athlete, but also a high-level student. Part of the reason I choose to play in Canada was due to the academic excellence at our universities and that is exactly what this award represents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weinert has earned Dean\u2019s List honours and U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian recognition in every season of her university career, received Brock\u2019s David Atkinson Surgite Award \u2014 given to a female student-athlete who excels both academically and athletically \u2014 and been named a U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Player of the Year and OUA First Team All-Star.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom very early on, my parents pushed my brothers and I to work hard and strive for the best grades possible,\u201d Weinert said. \u201cThey challenged us to always take the more difficult paths that lead to the greatest possibilities and have supported us along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her father, Eric, has also played a significant role in her development as a player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has always encouraged me to be the best basketball player and to commit to my craft. My dad is a listening ear and has challenged me to be a better teammate, player and leader during the past five years,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Weinert has led the country in scoring in both points per game and total points the past two seasons and surpassed the 2000-career point this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMadalyn is and remains everything that we want a Badger to be: dedicated, determined and devoted academically and athletically,\u201d said women\u2019s basketball head coach Shae Dheensaw.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her success and many accolades, Weinert remains grounded in the community that helped share her journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMadalyn is a true leader, leading by example and supporting not only her own teammates but her fellow Badger teams,\u201d said Melissa Krist, Executive Director, Brock Sports and Recreation. \u201cMadalyn is the first face you will see when she is not competing, supporting her peers on the sidelines on the water, on the court or on the field.
