{"id":106568,"date":"2025-12-10T13:49:55","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T18:49:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=106568"},"modified":"2025-12-10T16:59:58","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T21:59:58","slug":"what-to-know-when-winter-weather-hits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/12\/what-to-know-when-winter-weather-hits\/","title":{"rendered":"What to know when winter weather hits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As winter arrives in Niagara, Brock students, faculty, staff and visitors are reminded to take extra precautions during inclement weather and to monitor the University&#8217;s channels for updates.<\/p>\n<p>In the event of severe weather, cancellations will be posted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock University website<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Brock News<\/a>, and Brock&#8217;s social media channels. If in-person classes and activities are cancelled, an email will also be sent to all Brock students, staff and faculty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winter travel tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check the weather forecast before travelling and allow extra travel time if snow or icy conditions are expected.<\/li>\n<li>Wear boots and shoes with deep treads and low heels that are designed for slippery weather conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Clear snow and ice from all car windows, lights and licence plates before driving.<\/li>\n<li>Park in lots or areas that have already been cleared of snow or ice.<\/li>\n<li>Take extra care when entering or exiting vehicles as ice can build up between parked vehicles.<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention while walking and go slowly on icy or snowy surfaces.<\/li>\n<li>Stay on cleared pathways and avoiding non-pedestrian areas such as snowbanks or unofficial paths.<\/li>\n<li>Follow illuminated travel routes before sunrise and after sunset.<\/li>\n<li>Keep feet planted shoulder-width apart to increase stability.<\/li>\n<li>Brush off debris from pant legs and footwear and shaking off water from umbrellas and jackets before entering a building.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid carrying large objects that reduce visibility and limit the ability to land safely during a fall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Members of the Brock community are also encouraged review the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/facilities-management\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/84\/SNOW-MAIN-PAGE-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snow and ice removal priority map<\/a> and familiarize themselves with the University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.sharepoint.com\/human-resources\/Documents\/Forms\/AllItems.aspx?id=%2Fhuman%2Dresources%2FDocuments%2FSTF%20Prevention%20Program%2Epdf&amp;parent=%2Fhuman%2Dresources%2FDocuments&amp;CT=1699633498566&amp;OR=OWA%2DNT&amp;CID=de75fc8d%2Dd1e3%2Dcda5%2D5836%2D8ba3810ffb55\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Slippery or unsafe conditions on outdoor pedestrian surfaces can be reported by calling the Facilities Management Customer Service One Call Hotline at 905-688-5550 x3717 or emailing\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:FM@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FM@brocku.ca<\/a> between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Outside of these hours, or when the University is closed, urgent slip and trip circumstances can be reported to Campus Safety Services at 905-688-5550 x3200.<\/p>\n<p>Incidents, injuries, near misses or health and safety hazards should be reported to a person of authority, such as an area supervisor or Brock employee. Circumstances should be reported through an <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/human-resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/Brock-Incident-Injury-Report-Form-01-25-18.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">injury\/incident report<\/a>.
