The Brock community is mourning the loss of Margaret (Marg) Raynor, a Faculty of Education Instructor remembered for her dedication to advancing Indigenous education at the University. She passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 3.<\/p>\n
Raynor\u2019s teaching journey with Brock began in 1999. She played a key role in developing the Indigenous Teacher Education program, conducting years of research and needs assessments while building connections in Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n
When Brock\u2019s Indigenous Bachelor of Education Primary\/Junior program launched in 2007, Raynor served for many years as both Program Co-ordinator and Instructor in foundational courses.<\/p>\n
Sarah McGean, Administrative Co-ordinator and Academic Advisor for Indigenous Educational Studies, said the outpouring of heartfelt condolences from former students in Northwestern Ontario communities speaks volumes to Raynor\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was \u2018mom\u2019 to so many; a kind, gentle spirit who was always helping people get where they needed to be \u2014\u00a0that\u2019s just who she was,\u201d McGean said.<\/p>\n
Sherri Vansickle, Assistant Professor of Indigenous Educational Studies, always appreciated Raynor\u2019s strong, consistent advocacy for students.<\/p>\n
\u201cMarg never gave up on anyone,” she said. “There are many students she helped and supported along the way on their path to graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Retired Faculty of Education faculty member Susan Sydor, previous Director of Indigenous Educational Studies programs, worked closely with Raynor on Brock\u2019s Bachelor of Education program offered in partnership with Oshki-Pimache-O-Win: The Wenjack Education Institute.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe all recognize Marg as a creative, flexible and skilled teacher. It was a gift to work with and know Marg,\u201d Sydor said.<\/p>\n
Raynor\u2019s family will be accepting friends and loved ones on Friday, Dec. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nicholls Funeral Home located at 330 Midland Ave in Midland, Ont. A Celebration of Life will follow in the spring\/summer of 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
