{"id":106431,"date":"2025-12-04T14:48:59","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T19:48:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=106431"},"modified":"2025-12-04T16:58:51","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T21:58:51","slug":"award-winning-chemistry-profs-classroom-approach-gets-positive-reaction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/12\/award-winning-chemistry-profs-classroom-approach-gets-positive-reaction\/","title":{"rendered":"Award-winning Chemistry prof\u2019s classroom approach gets positive reaction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chemistry wasn\u2019t originally part of Divya Kaur Matta\u2019s career formula.<\/p>\n<p>It was a subject she couldn\u2019t quite connect with, and she never quite knew why.<\/p>\n<p>That changed, however, when she met educators who helped her realize the barrier wasn\u2019t chemistry itself, but how it was being taught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that you hate chemistry, it\u2019s that no one has shown you how to understand it,\u201d says Matta,\u00a0 now a Brock University Assistant Professor of Chemistry, as she reflects on finding the path to her passion.<\/p>\n<p>Matta has kept that lesson close at hand as she embarked on her own teaching journey \u2014 and it has served her well.<\/p>\n<p>Her efforts in the classroom saw her honoured with the University\u2019s 2025 Excellence in Teaching Award for Early Career Faculty during the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation\u2019s (CPI) Tribute to Teaching on Thursday, Dec. 4. The recognition pays tribute to Matta\u2019s impact on student learning and her ability to shift students\u2019 attitudes toward chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery year, CPI is delighted to receive nominations for these awards that reflect the high calibre of teaching across campus,\u201d says Giulia Forsythe, CPI Director of Teaching and Learning.<\/p>\n<p>Also honoured at Thursday\u2019s awards ceremony was Brock\u2019s 2025 Distinguished Teaching Award recipient <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/11\/mindfulness-key-to-fostering-a-strong-classroom-community-says-award-winning-prof\/\">Pauli Gardner<\/a>, who delivered the event\u2019s keynote address, and 2025 Faculty Fellows in Accessibility: Shannon Welbourn and Christiana Okyere Folson.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_106437\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/TributeTeaching_46-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106437\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-106437 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/TributeTeaching_46-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Audience listens as a speaker stands at a Brock University podium beside a screen displaying a Distinguished Teaching Award presentation in a bright, glass-walled room.\" width=\"590\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-106437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pauli Gardner delivers an address after receiving the Distinguished Teaching Award in Cairns Atrium.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition, CPI recognized and celebrated Instructor Certificate recipients, 2025 Faculty award recipients, 2025 TA Award recipients, Current Chancellor\u2019s Chairs for Teaching Excellence, 3M National Teaching Fellows, and all Brock Teaching Excellence, Distinguished Teaching and 3M recipients in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>Since joining Brock \u00a0as an Assistant Professor in 2022, Matta has seen many first-year students arrive feeling exactly as she once did: uneasy, overwhelmed or openly disinterested in the chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>She views this not as a barrier, but as the beginning of a transformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf students understand what you are presenting, they will want to learn more,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Matta\u2019s teaching philosophy is grounded in clarity, compassion and evidence-based design.<\/p>\n<p>She treats her classroom like a laboratory, aiming to diagnose where learners struggle, test new strategies and refine the design until students gain confidence.\u00a0 Her approach emphasizes adult-to-adult communication, clear expectations and learning materials that meet students where they are.<\/p>\n<p>This approach, she says, helps students build confidence while reducing anxiety and encouraging genuine engagement with course concepts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen students feel respected and supported, their attitudes shift,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>To bridge gaps for students with limited science backgrounds, Matta incorporates videos, adaptive quizzes and real-world examples of chemistry in action to help demystify core concepts. Her classes demonstrate how chemical principles underpin everyday mechanisms and systems, making the subject more accessible and relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Her goal is always the same: &#8220;I want students to carry durable curiosity, the courage to tackle unfamiliar problems and the confidence to say, \u2018I belong in science,\u2019&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>Matta\u2019s research brings that same sense of curiosity and purpose. She uses computer simulations to study photosynthesis at the atomic level \u2014 how the molecules in plants absorb sunlight and turn it into usable energy with remarkable efficiency. By understanding these processes in detail, her work helps inform solutions related to clean technologies, biofuels, crop resilience and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond research, Matta collaborates with a colleague in the social sciences on initiatives to make science more accessible and inclusive. Her outreach includes mentoring high-school students, particularly young women and those underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).<\/p>\n<p>Her own journey fuels her empathy.
