{"id":105429,"date":"2025-10-20T16:23:39","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T20:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=105429"},"modified":"2025-10-21T16:14:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T20:14:19","slug":"grads-spread-roots-in-niagara-through-career-launching-co-ops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/10\/grads-spread-roots-in-niagara-through-career-launching-co-ops\/","title":{"rendered":"Grads \u2018spread roots in Niagara\u2019 through career-launching co-ops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yanan Liu (MBA ISP \u201925) says it wasn&#8217;t easy to leave everything behind \u2014 her hometown, a well-paying job and a network of family and friends \u2014 to travel to Canada and study at Brock University.<\/p>\n<p>But when she reflects on all she\u2019s gained over the past two years, she knows it was worth it.<\/p>\n<p>An international student from Jiayuguan City in China, Liu earned her MBA during Brock\u2019s 118th Convocation on Friday, Oct. 17. She crossed the stage with not only with a new degree, but also a full-time job as a Portfolio Administrator at CIBC Mellon thanks to her positive co-op experience with CIBC Mellon\u2019s Cash and FX Operations team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, it was such a relief \u2014 I\u2019m not exaggerating when I say I actually cried,\u201d Liu says. \u201cI took a big risk coming here to start over and receiving that offer was more than just career progress, it was a real validation of my abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During her co-op work term, she was responsible for managing investment cash flows for fund managers.<\/p>\n<p>With an undergraduate degree in sociology and previous work experience in the technology and government sectors, Liu says learning the ins and outs of a new industry came with a steep learning curve. She also had to overcome a language barrier, embracing any opportunity she could to improve her spoken English.<\/p>\n<p>She credits her Goodman School of Business professors and strong curriculum with equipping her with the core knowledge needed and her co-op with allowing her to hone her social and professional skills in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt helped me strengthen my technical, analytical and problem-solving skills while also learning to communicate effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment,\u201d Liu said. \u201cI discovered that I really enjoy financial operations and process transformation and want to continue developing my career in the financial industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_105433\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/OliviaBarnes_2-1-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105433\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-105433\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/OliviaBarnes_2-1-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A woman in academic regalia smiles during a university graduation ceremony.\" width=\"351\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-105433\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Olivia Barnes (BPH \u201925), who graduated during Brock\u2019s 118th Convocation on Friday, Oct. 17, has secured a full-time job with Dykstra Greenhouses thanks to her co-op work term.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Olivia Barnes (BPH \u201925), who came to Brock from Pickering, Ont., will also be making the Niagara region her permanent home after landing a full-time job as a Quality Assurance Assistant with Dykstra Greenhouses.<\/p>\n<p>Barnes, who graduated with a Bachelor of Public Health and a Minor in Labour Studies,\u00a0completed her first two co-op work terms at Pestalto Environmental Health Services and Norgen Biotek.<\/p>\n<p>She then secured her final placement with Dykstra Greenhouses after connecting with the company at the Experience Expo hosted by the University\u2019s Co-op, Career and Experiential Education (CCEE) team.
