{"id":104547,"date":"2025-09-18T12:04:34","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T16:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=104547"},"modified":"2025-09-18T17:05:04","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T21:05:04","slug":"busu-gsa-to-offer-free-food-events-this-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/09\/busu-gsa-to-offer-free-food-events-this-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"BUSU, GSA to offer free food events this fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brockbusu.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/brockgsa.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graduate Students\u2019 Association (GSA)<\/a> are teaming up to support their fellow Badgers with a slate of free food events this term.<\/p>\n<p>Offered as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/food-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Food First Program<\/a>, the events will provide free meals and snacks on Brock\u2019s main campus and at the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/miwsfpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts<\/a> in downtown St. Catharines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood insecurity is a growing problem for students, which is why the Food First program is so important,\u201d said BUSU President Fiona Seabrook. \u201cStudents should be able to focus on their studies without worrying about where their next meal is coming from, and these events not only help meet that need, but also provide a welcoming space where students can connect with one another.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Students can grab a to-go bag of healthy snacks during Grab and Go Breakfasts every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday outside Union Station in the Student-Alumni Centre from 8:45 a.m. until supplies run out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brockbusu.ca\/whats-on\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Upcoming free food events<\/a> open to undergraduate and graduate students include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wednesday, Oct. 22 \u2014 Hot breakfast in Union Station 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.<\/li>\n<li>Thursday, Oct. 30 \u2014 Perogies in Union Station from 7 to 9 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday, Nov. 12 \u2014 Sandwich bar at MIWSFPA Lobby from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday, Nov. 12 \u2014 Pasta bar in Union Station from 7 to 9 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Thursday, Nov. 13 \u2014 Hot breakfast in Union Station from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.<\/li>\n<li>Tuesday, Dec. 2 \u2014 Poutine in Union Station from 7 to 9 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Current registered graduate students can also pick up free food, while supplies last, at GSA\u2019s monthly grab and go events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tuesday, Sept. 23 \u2014 Samosas in MCC 300 from noon to 1 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Tuesday, Oct. 21 \u2014 Thanksgiving dinner featuring vegetarian stuffing, a dinner roll and a butter tart in MCC 300 from noon to 1 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Tuesday, Nov. 25 \u2014Vegetarian chili in MCC 300 from noon to 1 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday, Dec. 3 \u2014 Tomato soup in MCC 300 from noon to 1 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe know that academic success cannot be separated from basic needs. Food insecurity is a reality many of our peers face, and it impacts health, focus and overall well-being,\u201d says GSA President Mario Berro (BSc &#8217;23). \u201cThat\u2019s why programs like Food First are not just helpful, they are essential.
