{"id":104441,"date":"2025-09-15T16:39:22","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T20:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=104441"},"modified":"2025-09-16T13:29:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T17:29:09","slug":"accounting-students-ace-capstone-case-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/09\/accounting-students-ace-capstone-case-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Accounting students ace Capstone Case Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Graduating accounting students put their professional skills and career readiness to the test at the inaugural Goodman Capstone Case Competition.<\/p>\n<p>Spearheaded by Michelle Lau, Associate Professor of Accounting, and Kareen Brown, Professor of Accounting, the initiative was designed to give students the experience of working together with faculty and employers in a case setting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe designed this competition to push our final-year students to rise to the challenge of integrating the knowledge they\u2019ve learned throughout their accounting studies,\u201d Lau said. \u201cIt builds teamwork and presentation and networking skills that will help them as they take their next steps towards their CPA designation.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_104445\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6U3A6298-copy-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104445\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-104445 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6U3A6298-copy-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Man in blue suit stands at a podium that says Goodman School of Business Brock University while speaking to people sitting at round tables.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-104445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taylor Leibow CEO Nigel Jacobs gave participants advice on how to continuing working on their presentation skills during his keynote at the Capstone Case Competition.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The competition started Sept. 2 when students received case training and groups were assigned the case. They then had the week to prepare their presentations and competed in judging on Sept. 6. Divided into two groups for judging, the top group from each room moved on to present in front of all competitors in a final showdown.<\/p>\n<p>The case, written by Goodman Professors of Accounting Barbara Sainty and Pascale Lapointe-Antunes, challenged students to evaluate the performance of a fictional zoo set in a not-for-profit environment and provide advice on strategic issues to external stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Ten employers came to participate in the networking sessions, with a few also partaking in competition judging. Nigel Jacobs, CEO of Taylor Leibow, judged both sessions and gave a keynote over lunch that touched on his observations of the presentations and how the students could use their feedback to grow as well insights from his own career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inaugural Capstone Case Competition is a great initiative,\u201d Jacobs said. \u201cAny time you can prepare for future challenges, it\u2019s the way to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The teams were competing for $1,000 grand prize and $500 runner up cheque, provided by CPA Ontario and Goodman\u2019s CPA Centre for Public Policy and Innovation in Accounting.
