{"id":104163,"date":"2025-09-04T15:00:40","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T19:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=104163"},"modified":"2025-09-04T16:09:22","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T20:09:22","slug":"royal-society-of-canada-honours-three-brock-profs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/09\/royal-society-of-canada-honours-three-brock-profs\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Society of Canada honours three Brock profs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three Brock University professors have been elected Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC).<\/p>\n<p>Professors Fiona Blaikie, Robert Dimand and Allison Glazebrook are being recognized for their exceptional contributions in the arts, humanities and sciences, and Canadian public life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFellowship in the Royal Society of Canada reflects the collective judgement of leading scholars that a Canadian researcher has made remarkable contributions in their discipline, developing new knowledge, understanding and insights,\u201d said Brock University Vice-President, Research Tim Kenyon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that three of our scholars were chosen by their peers to be leaders in their fields shows the tremendous impact Brock research has on a national level,\u201d he says. \u201cI look forward to the contributions Drs. Blaikie, Dimand and Glazebrook will make through this honour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among her many research interests, Blaikie has examined how youth and young adults construct and express their shifting identities within subcultures through popular culture, art making and social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsserting identity raises issues of class, gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion and politics,\u201d says Blaikie, one of the themes explored in her 2021 edited collection, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Visual-and-Cultural-Identity-Constructs-of-Global-Youth-Situated-Embodied\/Blaikie\/p\/book\/9780367519490\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Visual and Cultural Identity Constructs of Global Youth and Young Adults: Situated, Embodied and Performed Ways of Being, Engaging and Belonging<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Blaikie, a recent co-chair of the global think tank the Art Education Research Institute (AERI) and Associate Director of Brock University\u2019s Posthumanism Research Institute, received the 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/05\/education-prof-honoured-with-international-arts-education-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USSEA\/InSEA International Ziegfeld Award<\/a>, which recognizes leaders making significant contributions to art education globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am committed to making an impact that is scholarly, relational, and personal,\u201d says the Professor of Educational Studies. \u201cIssues of belonging and relevance in and beyond the academy are key, along with nurturing integral relationships with my students and colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The issue of gender is also a theme in Dimand\u2019s scholarship, including the 2004 co-edited book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Status-Women-Classical-Economic-Thought\/dp\/1840644788\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Status of Women in Classical Economic Thought<\/em><\/a>, the 2000 co-edited book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Biographical-Dictionary-Women-Economists\/dp\/1852789646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A Biographical Dictionary of Women Economists<\/em><\/a> and the 2018 co-edited book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Routledge-Handbook-History-Economic-Thought\/dp\/0367659786#detailBullets_feature_div\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Routledge Handbook of the History of Women&#8217;s Economic Thought<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecovering the neglected record of women&#8217;s contributions to economics\u00a0shows that, despite obstacles and discrimination, women have a long and distinguished history of contributing to economic analysis and of critiquing economic and social oppression,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the history of women in economics, the Professor of Economics has published more than 120 refereed journal articles primarily on the history of macroeconomics and the early history of game theory.<\/p>\n<p>In books such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Origins-Keynesian-Revolution-Development-Employment\/dp\/0804715254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Origins of the Keynesian Revolution: The Development of Keynes&#8217; Theory of Employment and Output<\/em><\/a>, Dimand documents the emergence of macroeconomics as a distinct field of economics.<\/p>\n<p>Dimand, former Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Economics Association and former President of the History of Economics Society, is <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/03\/distinguished-research-and-creative-activity-award-lecture-nearing\/\">the 2017 recipient<\/a> of Brock University\u2019s Distinguished Research and Creative Activity Award and was named Distinguished Researcher in the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Equity, diversity and privilege are also top of mind for Glazebrook, whose research focuses on women, gender, sexuality and slavery in ancient Greece.<\/p>\n<p>Through publications, conference panels and edited volumes, Glazebrook has brought scholars together to carve out a subfield in Greek history that explores sexual labour in ancient Greece, an area of study \u201clargely taboo when I first graduated with my PhD,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we\u2019re doing archaeology, we also need to look for marginalized communities,\u201d says the Professor of Classics and Archaeology. \u201cCentering the individuals marginalized in the evidence uncovers new perspectives and alternate histories to reveal the complexities of ancient Greek society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glazebrook received the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/07\/classics-prof-earns-national-honour-for-equity-advancing-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Classical Association of Canada\u2019s (CAC) 2025 Award of Merit<\/a> and was a past president of The Classical Association of Canada.
