{"id":104120,"date":"2025-09-02T13:44:59","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T17:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=104120"},"modified":"2025-09-02T16:48:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T20:48:15","slug":"new-badgers-get-set-for-success-at-orientation-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/09\/new-badgers-get-set-for-success-at-orientation-events\/","title":{"rendered":"New Badgers get set for success at orientation events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock welcomed thousands of new undergraduate and graduate students to campus on Tuesday, Sept. 2 with orientation events designed to help them make the most of their university experience.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_104121\" style=\"width: 359px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104121\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-104121\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/AcademicOrientation_17-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A Brock University leader addresses a packed gymnasium during Academic Orientation, speaking from a podium marked with the University\u2019s 60th anniversary logo.\" width=\"349\" height=\"233\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-104121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock President and Vice-Chancellor Lesley Rigg addressed a full crowd in Ian Beddis Gymnasium.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Held in the Ian Beddis Gymnasium, the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/orientation\/nswao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Student Welcome and Academic Orientation<\/a> (NSWAO) featured greetings from President and Vice-Chancellor Lesley Rigg, Brock Students\u2019 Union President Fiona Seabrook and Associate Vice-President, Students Brad Clarke, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Rigg encouraged students to embrace the full university experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere at Brock, education isn\u2019t just about what happens in the classroom. It\u2019s all of the experiences that are happening across our campus,\u201d she said. \u201cLearning is not a passive activity. It\u2019s not about using artificial intelligence to get the answer. It\u2019s about absorbing the knowledge. It\u2019s an active process. It\u2019s about diving in and experiencing it. Take this experience and make it what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the opening ceremony, students attended Faculty-specific orientation sessions that introduced them to academic supports and resources.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_104122\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104122\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-104122\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/AcademicOrientation_18-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A student leader welcomes peers at Brock University\u2019s Academic Orientation, speaking to the crowd from a clear podium inside the gymnasium.\" width=\"351\" height=\"234\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-104122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University Student Union (BUSU) President Fiona Seabrook spoke during the New Student Welcome and Academic Orientation.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This year\u2019s NSWAO keynote speaker was Katie Desveaux (BSM \u201918, MEd \u201921), who earned a Bachelor of Sport Management and Master of Education from Brock.<\/p>\n<p>A former varsity figure skater and 2016-17 Brock Female Athlete of the Year, Desveaux shared how her involvement in academics, athletics and experiential learning shaped her path from working at Brock to her current role as a Human Resource Business Partner at PepsiCo Canada.<\/p>\n<p>She encouraged students to pursue opportunities both in and outside the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate Orientation welcomed more than 200 new graduate students in Thistle Complex.
