Brock has unveiled a new 20,000-sq.-ft. extension that will provide more space for its Faculty of Education.<\/p>\n

The ribbon was cut Thursday on an extension to Robert S. K. Welch Hall, an $8.5-million addition to a building originally constructed in 1970. It is the first \u201cStudent Learning Environment\u201d project completed as part of The Campaign for a Bold New Brock.<\/p>\n

The extension provides state-of-the-art learning facilities and informal spaces for the Faculty\u2019s 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 150 faculty, staff and faculty advisors.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday is the culmination of a long journey,\u201d said James Heap, Dean of the Faculty of Education. \u201cIt has taken more than four years for this project to bring us to today \u2014 a day when we celebrate the opportunities for increased collaboration and collegiality.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the opening ceremonies, PhD candidate Danielle Beckett called the extension an \u201cinviting atmosphere,\u201d particularly its new computer lab and plenty of space for laptop computer use.<\/p>\n

The Faculty of Education prepares for the next generation of teachers, while enhancing the skills of current teachers through qualification courses offered at Brock, said Rudi Kroeker, Chair of the Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis kind of support may not be visible to the broader community on a day-to-day basis, but I can tell you that they\u2019re making a difference to the front line of education right here in our community, in classrooms throughout our region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The extension includes two Faculty meeting rooms, a Teaching Assistants\u2019 office, a graduate student computer lab\/suite and 62 Faculty offices. A student lounge area will be located at the lowest level along with new study spaces on each floor.<\/p>\n
