{"id":103789,"date":"2025-08-13T16:04:32","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T20:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=103789"},"modified":"2025-08-13T16:04:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T20:04:32","slug":"new-resource-aims-to-tackle-canadas-safe-sport-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/08\/new-resource-aims-to-tackle-canadas-safe-sport-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"New resource aims to tackle Canada\u2019s safe sport crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From playground to podium, making sport safer for participants at all levels of engagement has been a lifelong endeavour for Julie Stevens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With increased attention turned to addressing <u><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/11\/safe-sport-in-canada-brock-forum-to-discuss-crisis-of-athlete-abuse-maltreatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-outlook-id=\"9ce5616c-ceac-4a56-8415-04483e6d515c\">Canada\u2019s safe sport crisis<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and a new year of school sports about to kick off, the Brock University Professor of Sport Management says the time is right to further emphasize the importance of safe sport practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstablishing clear expectations, promoting accountability and cultivating participant well-being helps to foster a more positive and inclusive sport environment,\u201d says Stevens. \u201cCreating a culture of safe sport allows all participants to have the opportunity to participate and flourish in environments free from abuse and maltreatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety has not always been a priority in Canadian sport, but Stevens believes that is now shifting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Canadian sport system was a leader in establishing the national coach certification program and long-term athlete development, she says, which had a positive influence on sport development in other countries. The\u00a0Future of Sport in Canada Commission was also established in 2023 to address systemic safety issues in the Canadian sport landscape.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103791\" style=\"width: 319px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Julie-Stevens.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103791\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-103791\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Julie-Stevens-1050x873.jpg\" alt=\"Professor of Sport Management Julie Stevens.\" width=\"309\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-103791\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor of Sport Management Julie Stevens is the editor of a free open education resource exploring safe sport issues and practices.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She says Canada now has a responsibility to match the progress of other countries and become a leader in the global safe sport movement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe stakeholders throughout the sport ecosystem face one major obstacle \u2014 the challenge of change,\u201d she says. \u201cThrough education, we can improve capacity to ensure safe sport experiences for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overcoming resistance to change will require fostering a climate that encourages decision-makers at all levels of sport to support the creation and implementation of new safe sport practices in their organizations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stevens says open education resources (OER) that are widely accessible and collaborative in nature can be particularly effective in providing sport leaders with relevant and practical tools to better understand and implement safe sport practices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her recently released <em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampusontario.pressbooks.pub\/safesport\/\" data-outlook-id=\"59fa6d2e-e8af-49be-8f6f-64f0a9b4fe04\">Safe Sport: Critical Issues and Practices (Second Edition<\/a><\/u><\/em><em>) <\/em>is a<em>\u00a0<\/em>free OER that aims to expand conversations about creating a safer, more inclusive sport sector in Canada.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGiven safe sport is a dynamic, evolving issue, an open education approach is a very effective way to support leaders and continuously cultivate awareness,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edited by Stevens<em>, <\/em>the comprehensive collection of 23 chapters written by 27 contributors draws on a broad range of knowledge grounded in athlete experiences, academic research and case studies from professionals and volunteers across the sport system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ebook is intended to inform, educate and empower various stakeholders \u2014 including athletes, coaches, officials, guardians, volunteers and administrators \u2014 to take meaningful action toward safe sport.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expanded second edition of<em>\u00a0Safe Sport<\/em>\u00a0also reflects ongoing conversations in the world of sports.
