{"id":103736,"date":"2025-08-07T16:59:30","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T20:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=103736"},"modified":"2025-08-07T16:59:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T20:59:30","slug":"royal-medal-recipients-equip-future-generations-for-life-long-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/08\/royal-medal-recipients-equip-future-generations-for-life-long-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal medal recipients equip future generations for life-long learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Driven by a deep belief that no young learners should get left behind, Amanda Pont-Shanks and Lucia Marchionda (BA \u201925, BEd \u201925) are dedicated to ensuring all youth experience a healthy, happy childhood.<\/p>\n<p>The two Faculty of Education (FOE) changemakers were honoured this spring with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gg.ca\/en\/honours\/canadian-honours\/directory-honours\/commemorative-medals\/king-charles-iii-coronation-medal#toc0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Charles III Coronation Medals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Administered by the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, the prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to Canada through transformative community involvement and service.<\/p>\n<p>Pont-Shanks, a final-year Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECE) student, was celebrated for her significant contributions and advocacy for M\u00e9tis-led early learning and child care.<\/p>\n<p>As Programs and Services Manager for early learning and child care with the M\u00e9tis Nation of Ontario, Pont-Shanks has helped better the lives of more than 3,000 M\u00e9tis children by connecting them to their culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love being part of the M\u00e9tis community; this is my life. The early educational years are critical to improve well-being for our community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103741\" style=\"width: 359px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/APS-Fall-Camp-2024.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103741\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-103741\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/APS-Fall-Camp-2024.jpg\" alt=\"A group of people around a picnic table outside.\" width=\"349\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-103741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amanda Pont-Shanks, Bachelor of Early Childhood Education student and King Charles III Coronation Medal recipient (second from left) worked alongside knowledge keeper Jim Tolles at the 2024 M\u00e9tis Nation of Ontario Fall Family Camp, seen above gifting an Early Learning and Child Care sash to a participating family.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Pont-Shanks develops supports for families related to improving literacy, accessing health care and mental health resources, and finding affordable camps and child care.<\/p>\n<p>Her connection with families begins at the start of live for M\u00e9tis babies in Ontario, when registered families receive the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metisnation.org\/news\/mno-early-learning-and-child-care-program-metis-baby-bundle-kits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baby Bundle program<\/a> developed by Pont-Shanks and her team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe provide baby care items and our original M\u00e9tis-centred children\u2019s books to help them connect with their culture through literacy as well as information for our programs and services,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Pont-Shanks sought feedback from her community about what they needed most, notably improving access to child care and physical and cognitive diagnostic assessments for children.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s BECE program has widened her perspective on the early years, she said, impacting how she thinks about program delivery for young learners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe BECE program made me think about what inclusion and accessibility really look like, and how we make sure all M\u00e9tis children can access what we offer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Pont-Shanks said inclusion is a main driver for her advocacy work as a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/employment-social-development\/corporate\/early-learning-child-care-advisory-council.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Advisory Council for Early Learning and Child Care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am advocating for Indigenous children across Canada,&#8221; she said. &#8220;My approach is through a M\u00e9tis lens, but we can\u2019t leave any of our cousins behind \u2014 every child matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marchionda, a recent graduate of Brock\u2019s Concurrent Teacher Education program, received the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of her outstanding dedication to education, community service and youth empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>With thousands of volunteer hours to her name, Marchionda has made a lasting impact in classrooms, churches and community spaces across Hamilton and Niagara.<\/p>\n<p>As Webmaster and Co-ordinator of the Christian Service Program for the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB), Marchionda developed a first-of-its-kind digital platform that fosters purpose-driven service across Ontario by connecting secondary students with meaningful volunteer opportunities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103742\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Lucia-Marchionda-copy-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103742\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-103742\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Lucia-Marchionda-copy-945x1050.jpg\" alt=\"A woman wearing black holds an award certificate smiling while standing beside a portrait of King Charles III.\" width=\"351\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-103742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University Faculty of Education graduate (BA \u201925, BEd \u201925) Lucia Marchionda was awarded a 2025 King Charles III Coronation Medal this past spring in recognition of her dedicated volunteer and community service across Hamilton and Niagara.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She has also served as Site Supervisor for the HWCDSB\u2019s Focus on Youth summer camp program, run by Rising Stars Athletics and Education, creating safe enriching spaces for children and teens in Hamilton\u2019s downtown core while mentoring high school students \u2014 many of whom were newcomers or at-risk youth \u2014 in leadership roles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was grateful for the opportunity to help create a safe space for children and teens who need it most,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Marchionda promotes equity and teamwork in her community, overseeing more than 150 volunteers and 600 children in a free soccer league as On-Field Program Coordinator for the ArcelorMittal Hamilton Grassroots Soccer Program and as Communications Coordinator for SportHamilton, where she helps to organize city-wide events and youth initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>A dedicated parish volunteer, Marchionda serves as Minister of Holy Communion and Lead Social Media Coordinator at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church and as Webmaster for St. Anthony of Padua Parish.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of her efforts, including service to the Hamilton\/Stoney Creek Terry Fox Run, McMaster Children\u2019s health initiatives and the Ontario Physical Literacy Summit, Marchionda received the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/07\/education-student-earns-national-praise-for-volunteer-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Government of Canada Emerging Leader Award and the Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to help people,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you have the ability to help, do it.
