{"id":103564,"date":"2025-07-29T15:41:17","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T19:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=103564"},"modified":"2025-08-06T11:22:47","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T15:22:47","slug":"funding-boost-enhances-experiential-learning-for-grape-and-wine-science-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/07\/funding-boost-enhances-experiential-learning-for-grape-and-wine-science-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Funding boost enhances experiential learning for Grape and Wine Science students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Victoria Parsons is spending her summer providing vital information to Niagara\u2019s vineyards \u2014\u00a0and getting paid for her efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock University Certificate in Grape and Wine Technology (OEVC) student is leveraging an opportunity offered through the program\u2019s Integrated Pest Management course that will see her monitor local vineyards for pests and fungal or viral stressors.<\/p>\n<p>The project is funded in part by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/services\/jobs\/training\/initiatives\/innovative-work-integrated-learning\/students.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Government of Canada\u2019s Innovative Work-Integrated Learning<\/a> Initiative and <a href=\"https:\/\/cewilcanada.ca\/CEWIL\/CEWIL\/Resources\/IWIL-Hub\/IWIL-Hub-Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada\u2019s (CEWIL) Innovation Hub (iHUB<\/a>). The support is specifically aligned with post-secondary credit projects that connect students with industry.<\/p>\n<p>Parsons is one of nine students who will head into the field to monitor\u00a0Niagara vineyards, collect samples and report their findings back to the grape growers.<\/p>\n<p>The work comes\u00a0at no cost to businesses, removing financial barriers for vineyard owners, and student compensation adds a level of professionalism and ownership outside of the classroom, says Brock Experiential Education Co-ordinator Jason Causarano.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents will be paid through this grant to complete their coursework as if they were employees of the vineyard,\u201d he says. \u201cThis valuable industry experience enhances course materials, providing a practical element to class projects that will benefit students in their future careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The funding \u2014 which also supports the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/programs\/undergraduate\/applied-grape-and-wine-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Applied Grape and Wine Science<\/a> program\u2019s (OEVI) fall Grapevine Biology course materials and administrative work \u2014 can total up to $60,000 based on student enrolment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot many students have an opportunity like this,\u201d says Parsons, who also holds a bachelor\u2019s degree in Biology from the University of British Columba.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know from experience that going out and looking for a job can be a full-time job on its own,\u201d she says. \u201cFor a student to have this opportunity to work, get paid and learn at the same time takes away that extra stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By removing barriers for all stakeholders, the program is designed to increase the number of work integrated learning (WIL) opportunities across Canada.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103575\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Student-and-Wendy-copy-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103575\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-103575\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Student-and-Wendy-copy-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A young woman is surrounded by people and lush grape vines as she gets a close look at a cluster of grapes.\" width=\"354\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-103575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock students visited Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery in St. Catharines during an on-site session of Brock\u2019s Integrated Pest Management course.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cCEWIL Canada is pleased to support innovative WIL experiences at Brock University where students have been able to receive financial support and recognition for their WIL experience,\u201d says CEWIL Canada Executive Director Charlene Marion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFunds such as these aim to eliminate barriers to WIL and increase access for all post-secondary students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario Patty Hajdu agrees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we invest in our youth, we invest in the future of our country.
