{"id":103444,"date":"2025-07-23T17:45:46","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T21:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=103444"},"modified":"2025-07-25T11:50:48","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T15:50:48","slug":"ccovi-shines-at-annual-chardonnay-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/07\/ccovi-shines-at-annual-chardonnay-celebration\/","title":{"rendered":"CCOVI shines at annual Chardonnay celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The dedication of Brock\u2019s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) to the Canadian grape and wine industry was on full display at the <a href=\"https:\/\/coolchardonnay.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Cool Climate Chardonnay Celebration (i4C)<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 250 professionals and enthusiasts packed the main ballroom at Niagara-on-the-Lake\u2019s White Oaks Resort for i4C\u2019s School of Cool, the first event of the four-day celebration, on Friday, July 17.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103448\" style=\"width: 367px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103448\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-103448\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/IMG_0365-copy-1050x788.jpg\" alt=\"A man pours wine tastings for a long line of waiting wine lovers.\" width=\"357\" height=\"268\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-103448\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute Operations Coordinator Taylor MaGee poured two wines from relaunched Canadian Wine Library during the walkaround tasting following the School of Cool on Friday, July 17.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>i4C\u2019s signature gathering featured speakers, moderated industry-expert panel sessions and tastings for attendees from around the Chardonnay-growing world.<\/p>\n<p>School of Cool participants also had the unique opportunity to experience some of the treasures housed in the relaunched\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/ccovi\/canadian-wine-library\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Wine Library<\/a>\u00a0(CWL) during the \u201cChardonnay\u2019s Coming of Age \u2013 A Retrospective\u201d session led by CCOVI Oenology Scientist Jennifer Kelly.<\/p>\n<p>Housed within CCOVI\u2019s 44,000-bottle cellar at Brock University, the CWL was developed to determine how Canadian wines age and provide producers with feedback based on results from scheduled tastings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was only fitting that we presented the 240-person audience with an opportunity to revisit, or to taste for the first time, a 1995 Chardonnay Reserve from Cave Spring Vineyard,\u201d said Kelly. \u201cIt showed beautifully, and everyone had the experience of enjoying a 30-year-old wine together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following School of Cool panel and tasting sessions, attendees were able to sample a variety of Chardonnays and meet with international winemakers and Ontario producers during a walkaround tasting.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103497\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103497\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-103497\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Taylor-and-Jonah-at-FNF-copy-1050x788.jpg\" alt=\"Two men pour wine tastings for guests at an event.\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-103497\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock\u2019s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) team hosted the What Kind of Cool Are You? interactive tasting as part of the 2025 International Cool Climate Chardonnay Celebration\u2019s Friday Night Flights on July 18. The tasting event asked attendees to pick a favourite style of Chardonnay wine from the line up. Then, using their responses, CCOVI staff created personalized roadmaps of all the Chardonnays available at the event.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The CWL presented two wines from Brock\u2019s cellared collection \u2014 a 1999 CSV Chardonnay from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cavespringvineyard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cave Spring Vineyard<\/a>\u00a0and a 1999 Founder\u2019s Reserve Chardonnay from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/inniskillinwines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inniskillin Wines<\/a>\u00a0 \u2014 poured by CCOVI Operations Coordinator Taylor MaGee, who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the CWL collection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was great to see so much interest in the wines we were pouring and the Canadian Wine Library. There is clearly a demand to see just how well VQA wines can hold up over time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The i4C celebrations continued Friday, July 18 with tastings at participating Niagara wineries and Friday Night Flights at the Niagara District Airport, which featured premium VQA Chardonnays from Ontario and around the world as well as CCOVI\u2019s popular \u201cWhat Kind of Cool are You?\u201d interactive tasting.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday included winery visits and tastings as well as the Chardonnay in the Vineyard World Tour Tasting and Dinner at Niagara-on-the-Lake\u2019s Riverbend Inn.
