{"id":103307,"date":"2025-07-17T15:21:52","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T19:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=103307"},"modified":"2025-07-17T20:51:51","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T00:51:51","slug":"government-boost-sees-students-make-community-impact-through-field-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/07\/government-boost-sees-students-make-community-impact-through-field-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Government boost sees students make community impact through field research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to tackling the instability that climate change causes to communities, Brock University\u2019s next generation of scientists is gaining the first-hand experience needed to make a tangible impact.<\/p>\n<p>As farmers move away from conventional fertilizers and toward more sustainable agricultural practices, for example, Brock environmental chemistry students have been studying the impacts of different farming methods on nearby ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, they sampled water, soil and vegetation collected from the Fonthill Family Fruit Farm to evaluate the impact of applying organic copper spray on local waterways, such as the Twelve Mile Creek. This is a vital habitat for brook trout, an indicator species for the health of cold-water stream ecosystems.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103314\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/CHEM-Whole-Class.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103314\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-103314 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/CHEM-Whole-Class-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Brock\u2019s environmental chemistry class poses for a group photo in a fruit orchard.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-103314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock environmental chemistry students have been studying the impacts of different farming methods on ecosystems, including conducting field work at an organic fruit farm in the Niagara region.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis CHEM 2P43 course, and the integration of the lab and the practical hands-on experience for our students, is the first of its kind in the chemistry department,\u201d says Assistant Professor of Chemistry Vaughn Mangal. \u201cStudents got into the field, gathered real-world data and then translated that data using advanced, sophisticated instruments to make sense of how contaminants are moving in their own backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After applying the spray \u2014 used to protect against various fungal and bacterial diseases \u2014 students used the department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/06\/research-aiming-to-boost-worldwide-food-security-among-brock-projects-awarded-3m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">newly acquired inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer<\/a> to assess whether the compound had spread beyond the application site.<\/p>\n<p>Although currently allowed for use in organic production, copper can potentially negatively impact wildlife populations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe outlet of the stream we tested had significantly more copper post-spray, proving that as water passes through the farm, it also picks up copper,\u201d says Isabelle Mowbray (BSc \u201925), who worked on the project.<\/p>\n<p>Farm owner\/operator Adam Gabourie says the results provided him with research-supported insight to help guide his operations as an organic farmer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It confirmed that moving beyond conventional organic fruit production measures in favour of a completely natural approach is much better practice for the nature of this site and the environment in general,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>The lab group is preparing the results of this research for future publication and plans to continue working with Gabourie on additional research.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103315\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ESRC-Students-Taking-Soil-Measurements.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103315\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-103315 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ESRC-Students-Taking-Soil-Measurements-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Group of students sit on the ground and use tools to measure the volume of rainfall outside a building in St. Catharines.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-103315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students in Brock\u2019s Surface Hydrology course worked on a project with the St. Catharines Downtown Association to assess the impact to nearby soil due to flooding on St. Paul Street after high-intensity rainfall events.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The project was supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/07\/government-funding-expands-access-to-work-integrated-learning-opportunities-for-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 funding<\/a> from the Government of Canada\u2019s Innovative Work-Integrated Learning Initiative, distributed through CEWIL Canada&#8217;s iHUB.<\/p>\n<p>In total, the program saw 526 Brock students across all Faculties receive more than $692,408 in direct and indirect support for work-integrated learning across 17 project-based grants and a University-wide bursary. Brock students may be eligible for funding through Brock\u2019s Co-op, Career and Experiential Education (CCEE) team.<\/p>\n<p>Also supported by the funding was the ERSC 4P61 \u2014 Surface Hydrology course.\u00a0 Students worked on an urban hydrology and modelling project with the St. Catharines Downtown Association to assess the flooding on St. Paul Street from high-intensity rainfall events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the key issues with urbanization is there is a lot of paved area, which is completely impermeable,\u201d says Assistant Professor of Earth Sciences Kelly Biagi. \u201cSo, it\u2019s very common to get flooding in cities after large rain events because the water doesn\u2019t have anywhere to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using collection buckets and a monitoring tool called a pressure transducer, students measured soil properties to understand their infiltration capacity and quantified the amount of water delivered for each rain event.
