{"id":103288,"date":"2025-07-16T16:22:36","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T20:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=103288"},"modified":"2025-07-16T16:22:36","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T20:22:36","slug":"the-ultimate-cellar-for-tasting-canadian-wines-opens-at-brock-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/07\/the-ultimate-cellar-for-tasting-canadian-wines-opens-at-brock-university\/","title":{"rendered":"The ultimate cellar for tasting Canadian wines opens at Brock University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the long-standing steward of the Canadian Wine Library (CWL), the Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) is now expanding opportunities for special interest groups, scholars and members of the media to access and review the nation\u2019s top vintages.<\/p>\n<p>Housed within CCOVI\u2019s 44,000-bottle cellar at Brock University, the newly relaunched CWL was developed to determine how Canadian wines age and provide producers with feedback based on results from scheduled tastings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanadian wines improve very well with age,\u201d says Barb Tatarnic, Manager of Professional Studies and Outreach at CCOVI. \u201cWe believe this message is not as clear as it should be and so, accordingly, the vision of the CWL is to demonstrate the potential of cellaring premium Canadian wines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CWL is a non-profit, revolving collection of the finest VQA and domestic wines grown and made in Canada. It evolved out of the Ontario Wine Library (OWL) via an agreement signed with Brock in 1998. The name was formally changed to the CWL in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Tatarnic says tasting groups, producers, educators and researchers can gain access to the library\u2019s wines by <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/ccovi\/canadian-wine-library\/wine-request-form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submitting an application on CCOVI&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to help inform the consumer on what they can expect from Canada\u2019s wines within the collection in regard to ageability and to serve as a resource for ongoing research in such areas as sensory evaluation, vintage variations and stylistic changes over time,\u201d says Tatarnic.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Aspler was an original member of the OWL\u2019s board of directors and one of the most respected wine writers in Canada, with more than 50 years of experience covering the industry.<\/p>\n<p>He says there are many benefits to this repository and, thanks to the selection of wines already in the collection, the CWL\u2019s inventory is off to a great start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have a permanent library of back vintages of Canadian wines is not only a treasured archive but an invaluable educational tool for winemakers, historians and enthusiasts alike,\u201d he says. \u201cThis collection \u2014 which grows annually with each vintage \u2014 represents the finest efforts of the Canadian wine industry and is curated under ideal conditions at Brock University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicholas Gizuk, Head Winemaker at Niagara-on-the-Lake\u2019s Inniskillin winery, agrees the CWL is an invaluable resource for the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have a place for wines to be properly stored and made available for private and public tastings and educational purposes is so important to our industry,\u201d he says. \u201cSometimes a great vintage will accidentally get sold out or they might get lost in a warehouse, but if they are put aside and kept separate in this library, it makes for unique opportunities down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the long-standing steward of the Canadian Wine Library (CWL), the Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) is now expanding opportunities for special interest groups, scholars and members of the media to access and review the nation\u2019s top vintages.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":92,"featured_media":103290,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[9794,7484,3319,41,1],"tags":[14725,11806,14724,61,14726,14723,856,550,9534,14722,14727],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/103288"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/92"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=103288"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/103288\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":103293,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/103288\/revisions\/103293"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/103290"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=103288"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=103288"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=103288"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
