{"id":102412,"date":"2025-06-12T18:24:39","date_gmt":"2025-06-12T22:24:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=102412"},"modified":"2025-06-12T18:24:39","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T22:24:39","slug":"three-generations-one-university-a-familys-legacy-at-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/06\/three-generations-one-university-a-familys-legacy-at-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Three generations, one university: A family\u2019s legacy at Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1968, Bob Cretney (BA \u201972, DIPLED \u201973, MEd \u201979) took a leap of faith that would impact his family for generations.<\/p>\n<p>He had been accepted to the Political Science program at the newly formed Brock University and, even though he didn\u2019t know a single soul in Niagara, decided it was the right fit to fuel his career aspirations.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly six decades later, after more than 30 years as an educator, Bob watched his granddaughter Abigail Shatford (BA \u201925, BEd \u201925) cross Brock\u2019s Convocation stage to receive her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees with a minor in Choral Music.<\/p>\n<p>Joining in the celebration on Thursday, June 12, were Abigail\u2019s parents, David and Lynn Shatford (BA \u201997), the latter of whom is also a proud Brock graduate and employee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so proud to be able to carry on this legacy,\u201d Abigail said, expressing how thankful she was to have her grandfather and parents by her side to mark the occasion. \u201cIt feels really amazing to be able to be a part of this and to step into success.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_102487\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AbigailShatland_1-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102487\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-102487 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AbigailShatland_1-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A woman in a Convocation gown shakes the hand of a woman in a top hat and traditional regalia while crossing the Convocation stage.\" width=\"500\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-102487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On Thursday, June 12, Abigail Shatford (BA \u201925, BEd \u201925) became the third generation of her family to graduate from Brock University.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bob said he was first and foremost \u201cvery proud\u201d of his granddaughter and the hard work that went into her milestone moment. The 78-year-old was also grateful to experience the rush of fond memories that came with walking through a transformed Brock University campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing to Brock was the best choice I ever made,\u201d he said while reflecting on his university days. \u201cI think Brock has been a good influence on our whole family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among some of Brock\u2019s earliest graduates, Bob earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in 1972 before returning in 1977 to complete his Master of Education.
