{"id":101106,"date":"2025-04-30T16:20:07","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T20:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=101106"},"modified":"2025-12-23T15:00:24","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T20:00:24","slug":"indigenous-research-grants-to-support-community-building-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/04\/indigenous-research-grants-to-support-community-building-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Research Grants to support community-building scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From health care to housing, this year\u2019s Brock University Indigenous Research Grants (IRGs) will support research on a range of significant topics.<\/p>\n<p>Offered by the Office of the Vice-President, Research with leadership from the Office of the Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement, the grants fund research or creative activities in any discipline and on any topic that relates to Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Indigenous Research Grant supports scholarship grounded in authentic engagement and co-creation of the research process and results,\u201d says Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement Robyn Bourgeois.\u00a0\u201cWe build community through research that aims to improve the lives of Indigenous people by implementing Indigenous ways of knowing and being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 IRGs are funding four projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cUsing Participatory Theatre to Eliminate Discrimination in Health Service Delivery\u201d \u2014 Co-led by Associate Professor of Women&#8217;s and Gender Studies Margot Francis and Assistant Professor of Education Sherri Vansickle, the project builds on <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/04\/brock-awarded-funding-for-research-on-youth-and-social-media-and-biases-in-health-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier work supported by the federal government\u2019s New Frontiers in Research Fund<\/a> to create, present and evaluate theatrical vignettes challenging discrimination in health care delivery<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHow are Ontario Indigenous Schools Funded by the Federal Government?\u201d \u2014 The research, led by Professor of Educational Studies Xiaobin Li, aims to find out how the federal government funds Indigenous elementary and secondary schools and compare that with provincial funding for non-Indigenous schools.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIndigenous Visions of Making Home in Niagara\u201d \u2014 Assistant Professor of Political Science Liam Midzain-Gobin and Adjunct Professor of Political Science Joanne Heritz\u2019s work follows up on <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/06\/brock-research-aims-to-amplify-indigenous-voices-amidst-housing-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their earlier IRG<\/a>, which saw the creation of the multi-organization Indigenous Housing Advisory Circle (IHAC). The team will incorporate and finalize content from sharing circles and conversations in two reports, which will be presented to the Indigenous community for their approval and then shared with the wider Niagara community.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cRelational International Stories in an Educative Global Context\u201d\u2014 Assistant Professor of Sociology and of Women\u2019s and Gender Studies Lyn Trudeau is studying if and how international students gain knowledge about Indigenous Peoples before and during their time in Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Acting Vice-President Research Michelle McGinn says the research topics in the January 2025 round, and the Grant itself, reflect Brock University\u2019s commitment to pursing diverse, inclusive scholarship, as articulated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/strategic-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025-2030 Institutional Strategic Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdvancing reconciliation requires awareness of Indigenous cultures, histories and contemporary realities and a deep appreciation for Indigenous ways of knowing and being,\u201d says McGinn. \u201cIndigenous scholarship fosters a research culture that draws upon the richness of lived experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/01\/brock-launches-its-first-indigenous-research-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First launched in 2021<\/a>, the IRG provides up to $7,500 in funding over two years to help researchers advance small-scale research programs and creative activities.<\/p>\n<p>Research and creative activities led by, or in partnership with, First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis Peoples are given priority, although research proposals involving Indigenous Peoples around the world are also welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty members wishing to apply should visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.sharepoint.com\/Research-Services\/SitePages\/Indigenous-Research-Grant.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indigenous Research Grant page<\/a> of the Research Services site (login required).
