Brock University will lower its flags to half-mast on Monday, April 28 in recognition of the National Day of Mourning, which honours workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to workplace hazards.<\/p>\n
Observed annually across Canada on April 28, the day is a time to reflect on the human cost of unsafe work environments and to renew a collective commitment to health and safety.<\/p>\n
Members of the Brock community are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we observe the National Day of Mourning in Canada, I invite all faculty and staff to take a moment to reflect on and pay tribute to the individuals who have suffered injury, illness or loss of life in workplaces across the nation,\u201d says James Iseghayan, Director of Health, Safety and Wellness.<\/p>\n
In 2023, the Association of Workers\u2019 Compensation Boards of Canada recorded 1,057 workplace fatalities, including 29 young workers aged 15 to 24. There were also 274,022 accepted claims for time lost due to workplace injuries or illnesses.<\/p>\n
