{"id":100819,"date":"2025-04-17T15:16:13","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T19:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=100819"},"modified":"2025-04-17T16:52:18","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T20:52:18","slug":"research-symposium-tackles-complexities-of-being-human","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/04\/research-symposium-tackles-complexities-of-being-human\/","title":{"rendered":"Research symposium tackles complexities of being human"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From local streetscapes to global stages, Gregory Betts is breaking barriers with his innovative literary writing and creative research on Canadian experimental literature.<\/p>\n<p>The Professor of English Language and Literature has had his poetry <a href=\"https:\/\/nac.org\/a-long-history-janet-marie-rogers-and-gregory-betts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stenciled onto downtown St. Catharines sidewalks<\/a>, his improvisatory music has been performed around the world and he is set to release an LP with Canada\u2019s legendary noise band, the Nihilist Spasm Band.<\/p>\n<p>Betts said humans are grappling on an existential level with climate change, on an ethical plane with the extension into artificial intelligence (AI), and on a social plane with the ever-increasing density of transglobal networks of communication and movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow might narrative, the most powerful human technology, and poetry, one of our most elemental arts, shift in such a moment to serve the needs of an ever-shifting human community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Betts and fellow scholars in Brock\u2019s Faculty of Humanities gathered at the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/humanities\/research\/institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Humanities Research Institute<\/a> (HRI) Symposium on Monday, April 14 to explore questions about the humanity\u2019s present challenges and opportunities for a sustainable future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_100810\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100810\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-100810\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Neta-Gordon-Gregory-Betts-922x1050.jpg\" alt=\"A man woman stand side by stand holding framed awards and smiling.\" width=\"350\" height=\"399\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-100810\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the Humanities Research Institute Symposium, English Professor Neta Gordon (left) was honoured with the Faculty of Humanities Distinguished Service Award and English Professor Gregory Betts was honoured with the Faculty of Humanities Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activity.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the event, Betts received the Faculty of Humanities Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activity while English Language and Literature Professor Neta Gordon was honoured with the Faculty of Humanities Distinguished Service Award.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon said a significant part of her scholarly identity \u2014 including research and teaching \u2014 has been developed through service, driven by the notion that professors have a responsibility for creating the spaces in which they work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to joke with colleagues that I had experience as a stage manager, and university service seemed a lot like that: the goal is to set up organized and supportive conditions so that everyone can perform brilliantly,\u201d Gordon said.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon has had significant impact through her roles as Chair of the Department of English Language and Literature from 2008 to 2014, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Curriculum and Student Affairs from 2018 to 2022 and many other committee positions.<\/p>\n<p>At the symposium, Gordon also presented her research that is <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/04\/brock-welcomes-celebrated-author-ann-marie-macdonald-as-research-collaborator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breaking ground in Canadian literary criticism<\/a> working with celebrated Canadian author Ann-Marie MacDonald.<\/p>\n<p>Dean of Humanities Carol Merriam said the twice-yearly HRI symposia are highlights for the faculty, gathering scholars and creators to share work and discuss the common interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Spring symposium is extra special, as on this occasion we honour two faculty award recipients for their contributions in key areas of our academic life,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Professor Betts and Professor Gordon have both had significant impact on the lives of their colleagues and students through their work, and we are thrilled to be able to recognize them with these awards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Organized by Elizabeth Vlossak, Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, the symposium featured five-minute \u201clightning talks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first panel unpacked topics related to technology with talks from Professor of Educational Studies David Hutchison who discussed AI and writing; Associate Professor of Digital Humanities Aaron Mauro who explored <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/01\/unity-needed-to-combat-cybercrime-in-schools-says-brock-prof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cybersecurity and deception<\/a>;\u00a0Interdisciplinary Studies PhD student Alison Innes who dove into <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/08\/new-network-to-build-podcasting-capacity-at-brock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">podcasting<\/a> and power; and a look at Associate Professor of Digital Humanities Alex Christie\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/11\/shaping-the-future-of-humanities-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research in augmented reality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor of Visual Arts Amy Friend also shared her <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/03\/visual-arts-prof-commissioned-for-new-york-times-magazine\/\">creative research in photography<\/a> and Assistant Professor of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (MLLC) Nicholas Hauck\u00a0spoke about the complexities of translation.<\/p>\n<p>The second panel included PhD candidate Alia Wazzan\u00a0who spoke about the representation of Arab women on Netflix; \u00a0Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities Sarah Stang who spoke about <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/10\/what-makes-monsters-monstrous-brock-experts-pull-back-the-mask\/\">monstrosity and gaming;<\/a>\u00a0Professor of English Language and Literature Martin Danahay\u00a0who shared his <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/02\/history-shows-how-a-trade-war-can-become-a-violent-conflict-brock-expert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research on \u201cdrug wars\u201d<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/04\/tas-honoured-for-dedication-to-student-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Interdisciplinary Humanities PhD student Anna Roshni Jose<\/a> who shared her research on domestic violence and the politics of embodiment and space;
