{"id":100532,"date":"2025-04-08T13:36:56","date_gmt":"2025-04-08T17:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=100532"},"modified":"2025-04-16T08:46:41","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T12:46:41","slug":"student-leaders-set-shining-example-for-future-badgers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/04\/student-leaders-set-shining-example-for-future-badgers\/","title":{"rendered":"Student leaders set shining example for future Badgers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A passionate advocate for mentorship in sport, Caroline Hummell knows all too well the powerful impact of leading by example.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a lesson the PhD in Applied Health Sciences candidate has learned through her research <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/03\/grad-students-postdocs-awarded-more-than-2m-in-federal-funding-for-game-changing-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on mentorship for girls and women in sport<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and one she also works to apply in her everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>Hummell&#8217;s research efforts along with her volunteerism in the community recently saw her recognized as one of 10 Brock University student leaders to receive a 2024-25 President\u2019s Surgite Award.<\/p>\n<p>The awards honour students who exemplify leadership, academic excellence and a commitment to making a difference in their communities. This year\u2019s recipients \u2014 recognized during an awards ceremony and luncheon with President and Vice-Chancellor Lesley Rigg on Wednesday, April 2 \u2014 reflect Brock\u2019s dedication to fostering innovation, inclusivity and leadership across disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis award recognizes students who are not only excelling academically, but who are also leading with purpose and compassion,&#8221; Rigg says. &#8220;This year\u2019s recipients reflect the very best of Brock; they are curious, courageous and committed to making a difference in their communities and in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hummell&#8217;s research delves into the critical distinction between role models and mentors in sports mentorship programs. Currently in the analysis phase of her research, Hummell has already identified key insights into the influence of mentorship on positive youth development in all areas of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest challenges I&#8217;ve noticed is having a clear understanding of the difference between mentors and role models,\u201d she said. \u201cMentorship involves the development and maintenance of a deep, personal relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond her research, Hummell is involved in mentorship initiatives on and off campus.
