How are Canadian culture, politics and society evolving and adapting to new challenges and opportunities?<\/p>\n

These critical questions are just some of the key themes and concepts students can explore through upcoming Spring\/Summer courses at Brock.<\/p>\n

“Understanding Canada means celebrating our strengths and confronting shortcomings. This is how we grow as a nation,\u201d said Dan Malleck, Director of Brock’s Centre for Canadian Studies.<\/p>\n

Students studying Canada contemplate what it means to live in a multicultural, diverse and complex society, said Malleck, who highlighted CANA 2P10 – Intercultural Communication in a Multicultural Canada<\/a> as a key course for students looking to expand their understanding of Canada\u2019s diversity. The course will discuss theories of intercultural communication and the roots of cultural differences in Canada.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsidering the negative attention that diversity and inclusion gets from some people these days, intercultural understanding seems more critical than ever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

First-year courses offering introductions to Canadian identity (CANA 1F91 – Introduction to Canadian Studies<\/a>) and health (HLSC 1F25 – Health: A Canadian Perspective<\/a>) will equip students with an understanding of Canada\u2019s makeup and contemporary issues.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s political landscape will be explained in POLI 2P12 – Canadian Government and Politics<\/a>, cross listed with Canadian Studies (CANA 2P12).<\/p>\n

The course will cover core institutions of Canadian government, including federalism, parliamentary government, electoral systems, the judiciary, constitutional rights and the machinery of government.<\/p>\n

Discussions surrounding how these institutions shape \u2014 and are shaped \u2014 by political parties, Indigenous politics and other social forces will take centre stage.<\/p>\n

DART 2P95 –\u00a0Contemporary Canadian Indigenous Theatre for Non-Majors<\/a> will offer students the chance to learn about the theatrical representation of Indigenous cultures in Canada, deepening perspectives on the significance of art and performance in society.<\/p>\n
