Going green at Canada Games Park

Construction workers have been busy laying sod at Brock University, but not where one might first think. The new Walker Sports and Abilities Centre at Canada Games Park will feature a green roof, which has several environmental sustainability benefits. The sod will provide shade, remove heat from the air and lower the temperature of the roof's surface and surrounding air. The green roof, combined with the ecological design of the folded roofscape and overhangs, will reduce the amount of energy required to cool down the facility from heat generated by sunlight. The green roof will also help minimize stormwater surface runoff. The folded roofscape and its green roof are two of many sustainability features found within the state-of-the-art sports complex that will make it 35 per cent more efficient and generate 45 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions than a standard building in Canada.
