Getting to the core of the matter

Researchers from Brock University collected freeze-core samples from the bottom of Conservation Halton's Crawford Lake on Sunday, Feb. 20 as they continue to investigate the site as a potential location to define a new epoch in the geologic time scale, the Anthropocene. The researchers, led by Earth Sciences Professor Francine McCarthy, are hoping the core samples will identify a 'Golden Spike' to define the Anthropocene epoch — the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.
