A record number of Brock graduate students across campus are gearing up to share their research – in just three minutes using a single slide — at the 2025 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) challenge next week.
Representing all six of the University’s teaching Faculties, the 25 participates will cover research topics ranging from the promotion of “ugly produce” to underwater archaeology in clear, concise presentations that captivate the audience.
As well as highlighting the importance of research communication and research excellence at Brock, the annual event also allows participants to compete for cash prizes and a spot to represent the University at the 3MT provincial finals.
Judging the presentations will be Brock graduates James Meisch (MSc ’24); Meghan Chayka (BBA ’12), co-founder and CEO of Stathletes; and Mahoganie Hines (BSc ’16), Clinical Nurse Specialist at St. Peter’s Hospital, along with community leader Karl Dockstader, a respected radio talk show host and Indigenous education advocate.
Meisch, a recent Master of Science graduate, earned second place at the 2024 3MT competition for his research on Eastern Carpenter Bees.
He says he is excited to be “on the other side” this year as a judge.
“3MT helped me break down my research and think about why it matters. Now, I want to help others develop those same skills,” he says. “The skills I learned from 3MT help me every day, especially when communicating with students as a teaching assistant. Understanding how to present material from the audience’s perspective is something I learned through the competition.”
Beyond helping students to share their work and develop critical communication skills, the event is also a chance for Brock’s broader research community to gather and celebrate the next generation of researchers.
“The growing engagement in this year’s 3MT competition speaks volumes about our students’ talent and drive,” says Suzanne Curtin, Vice-Provost and Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs. “We are committed to nurturing student research and fostering an environment that encourages clear, impactful communication. The 3MT competition showcases not only our students’ innovation but also the significant contributions they make to their fields and society.”
The event, which will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25 in Pond Inlet, is open to the public and all members of the Brock community. Attendees will be able to vote for the People’s Choice Award prize, enjoy light refreshments and attend a reception following the presentation. Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP on ExperienceBU.
