What’s open and closed at Brock during the holidays 

NOTE: This story was posted prior to the announcement of a provincewide lockdown starting later this week. Brock University will move into its Stage 1 (Lockdown) effective at noon on Thursday, Dec. 24. Please see this story for the latest information about what will be open and closed on campus. The story below is in the process of being updated.

Brock University will close at noon on Thursday, Dec. 24 for its year-end holiday break and in accordance with the provincewide lockdown scheduled to begin Saturday, Dec. 26.

While Brock employees will resume working remotely on Wednesday, Jan. 6, the government lockdown will remain in effect until at least Friday, Jan. 22 and will impact campus operations. With Brock’s Winter Term classes starting on Monday, Jan. 11, updates will be provided on changes as virtually all classes will begin the Term online and remain there until further notice.

As of noon on Dec. 24, Brock will move into Stage 1 of its own Stages of Response and Recovery plan, which will impact a number of areas as the University modifies its operations to abide by public health guidelines.

Main campus buildings will not be accessible during the closure except for pre-authorized visits due to critical operational requirements.

During this period the only security/access desk will be at the Rankin Family Pavilion, at the foot of Schmon Tower. It will be staffed daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Jan. 2, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 3 to 5, and will return to normal operating hours (7 a.m. to 11 p.m.) with authorized access Jan. 6.

The screening entry at Cairns Complex will reopen Jan. 3 from noon to 8 p.m., Jan. 4 to 5 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and resume normal operating hours (7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.) beginning Jan. 6.

The Walker Complex screening entry will remain closed during the lockdown period.

Please note that heating setbacks and ventilation reductions will be in effect across campus during the closure.

 

Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts will close Dec. 24 at noon and remain closed with classes delivered online.

 

Hamilton Campus remains closed as classes continue to be delivered online.

 

Research facilities (main campus only): Only time-sensitive research will be permitted. For the latest guidance on research access and the impact moving to Grey will have, please visit the Brock Coronavirus FAQ for research.

 

Winter Term classes will begin online on Monday, Jan. 11, with very few exceptions.

Parking Services: Free parking will be available in all lots on main campus from Friday, Dec. 25 to Tuesday, Jan. 5. Parking regulations still apply:

  • No parking in a fire route or in bus stops.
  • Accessible permits must be displayed while parking in accessible spaces.
  • Obstructing roads, laneways or loading/unloading areas is prohibited.
  • Parking on landscaped areas or walkways is prohibited.
  • No overnight parking is permitted (2 to 5 a.m. daily).

Regular parking operations will resume Wednesday, Jan. 6. Should there be a snow event, Visitor Lot D will be cleared first and available for parking.

 

Residences: All student residences will be closed and unavailable to students at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 23 and reopen at noon on Sunday, Jan. 3.

During the closure period, there will be no service desks, custodial, maintenance or other services provided, and there is no access to the residences.

Only students who indicated on their online residence application their need to stay over the winter break, and who have been granted permission by the Department of Residences, are permitted to stay in residence during the closure.

Dining Services: Guernsey Market, the only food service operating on campus, will close at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 23, and reopen on Sunday Jan. 3 from noon to 8 p.m., resuming regular hours for takeout only starting Monday, Jan. 4 (9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays). Indoor dining is suspended until further notice.

Note: From Jan. 3 to 5, Guernsey Market is only open to residence students and on-site staff. It is not open to the public.

 

James A. Gibson Library: Individual bookable study space and print book pickup continues to be available until noon on Thursday, Dec. 24, when the Library will close for the holidays until Jan. 6. The Library will then be available only for contactless book pickup. Study space is closed until further notice.

Student Health Services: Student Health Services in Harrison Hall, and the Campus Pharmacy in Heritage Plaza, 605 Glenridge Ave., will close at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, and re-open at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6.

The COVID nurse will be available starting at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, and can be reached via phone at 289-968-5273 or by email at covid19@brocku.ca

Personal Counselling Services will be closed during the University holiday break. Phone lines, live chat and emails will be answered until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23. Counselling services will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Until Dec. 23, student counselling appointments are available and can be booked by calling 1-833-BROCK-33 (1-833-276-2533) or if outside North America 001-416-382-3257 (long-distance charges may apply). Students can also schedule a drop-in via the online booking portal.

Walker Sports Complex: The Walker Sports Complex will close on Thursday, Dec. 24 and remain closed until further notice.

Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute: CCOVI’s Analytical Services Lab and Grapevine Virus Testing Services will close on Tuesday, Dec. 22 and reopen on Thursday, Jan. 7. The last day to bring in samples for analysis is Monday, Dec. 21. Visit brocku.ca/ccovi for more details.
