Homecoming weekend will be a family affair for the Abrams

For one family, Homecoming weekend will be a reunion in more ways than one. Lindsey Abrams, a third-year concurrent education student, is eagerly anticipating Homecoming weekend because it’s bringing her parents for a visit from Prince Edward Island.

Her parents Kelley Abrams (BRLs ’83) and Gary Abrams (BEd ’82; BEd ’83) are planning to attend Homecoming weekend Sept. 16-18.

“My parents have been back a few times to help me move but I want to show them around the University. I’m really excited to show my dad the Alumni Turf Field,” she said.

Her parents met in 1981 after attending several of the same classes at Brock.

They went on to successful careers within the Kenora School Board in Northern Ontario before retiring to Prince Edward Island.

“While we grew up in Ontario, we both fell in love with Prince Edward Island while visiting one summer with our two girls. We knew we would be back to retire here one day,” Kelley said.

While her parents and their experience at Brock influenced her decision to attend, it was more about the great reputation of the concurrent education program that made Brock Lindsey’s first choice for post-secondary education.

“I love university and I’ve had the best experience here at Brock,” she said.

Lindsey is looking forward to completing her degree and joining her parents as fellow Brock alumni. Knowing the competition for teaching positions in Canada, she has plans to travel to Asia to learn more about the culture and to receive practical experience in the classroom.

During their visit on Homecoming weekend, the Abrams are looking forward to celebrating together as a family.

Kelley and Gary also plan on meeting up with good friends who live locally and who they have continued to stay connected with since university.

“We have plans to head to pub night on Friday and then return to campus on Saturday and view the wine cellar at Brock,” said Kelley.

The couple will receive a toast at the Alumni Recognition Reception as they get their Brock cameo pin on Saturday afternoon. The pin recognizes their successes and connection to Brock after graduating 25 or more years ago.
