This weekend was the BIG weekend a lot of people had been looking forward too. On Saturday and Sunday was the Flora Broley Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament. My housemate, Laura started the tournament in first year as an initiative project for the Brock Leaders Citizen Society (BLCS). With Laura and the help of her team members, it has become an annual successful charity tournament for a great cause! This entire event that raises thousands of dollars is completely organized by Brock students. FYI-the picture on the side is the logo on the t-shirts this year – isn’t awesome?!
The tournament is held at St. Catharines ball hockey (ballhockey.com) arenas. Teams of 9-13 players play in a weekend-long tournament. My housemate, Jenn and my good friend, Aaron both played in the tournament this year – they loved it! Each player donates $25 to play and for a pizza lunch. Snacks and drinks are available all day. Another housemate, Katherine baked some delicious banana chocolate chip muffins to sell….I had at least 2 or more! A competitive station for the accuracy challenge and the hardest shot is open to win some prizes as well. All of the donations from the players’ entry fee, money from the food and the competitions went towards the Alzheimer’s Society in the Niagara Region.
This year, a caregiver with the Alzheimer’s Society spoke about Alzheimer’s at the tournament and it was a pleasure to have her.
If you like playing floor hockey, I encourage you to come to next year’s event. Look out for the advertising in March. With music, food, prizes (like DQ cakes, gift certificates, and a membership to paintball), friends and a little bit of competition – who would not have fun?!
*Congratulations to the BLCS members who ran the event – you did a great job!
*Thank you to all of the sponsors for helping this event 🙂
