Brock University – Recreational Services – Yoga

Hey All!

I took my last experimental class with Brock U’s recreational services on Wednesday. I took Oda’s yoga class that was 1.5 hours.

I believe yoga originated in ancient India. It is not a culture, but it is a choice of lifestyle. There are several philosophies and branches of philosophy. The goal of yoga is to gain a state of peace spiritually and calmness within your inner core and holistically as an individual. Oda described it as opening up channels in your bodily systems and focusing on tensed spots in your body. In North America, you will notice that yoga has become more popular in regards to taking classes and in marketing products (ie: Lululemon).

In Oda’s class, she instructed us through several movement sets and stretches. On Wednesday our class worked on all muscles, however we focused on our spine and abdominal muscles. I may not have been successful withe very pose but it was my first official time doing yoga. It was also hard to not talk or laugh for 1.5 hours. This is difficult for a generally happy person, like me. I also had the opportunity to try an upside down pose, in which my legs were straight in the arm while my hands and abdominal muscles supported my lower spine. Oda’s class was a great experience for therapeutic yoga! If this is your hobby, I recommend it!

**PS. This is not me in the picture but I did attempt this pose 🙂
