A requirement of each member of the Brock Leaders Citizenship Society (BLCS) is to complete one level of Brock’s Foundations in Leadership Series each year of his/her membership. As a third-year member of the BLCS, I am currently enrolled in my third Foundations in Leadership practicum!

These practicums are designed to give students like you, “self awareness and many of the basic skills used by effective leaders. With the completion of each of the practicum levels, you will add to the reservoir of leadership tools at your disposal and enhance your competence when assuming leadership positions” (see the Foundations in Leadership website for more!) This is just their fancy way of saying that the workshops help pave your road to becoming an awesome leader! And I don’t just mean an official leader – one in a work position perhaps – but also as a social, emotional, and academic leader. I’ve found that the first three levels of the program have helped me to become a better student, roommate, friend, girlfriend and all-around communicator! The series has four levels as follows:

  • Bronze -Foundations In Interpersonal Communications,
  • Silver – Foundations In Problem Solving and Conflict Management,
  • Gold – Foundations In Group Work, and
  • Platinum – Foundations In Leadership Style.

I am currently enrolled in Gold which is all about working in groups. Although I have used some of the skills I’m learning in group projects, I have also used them in social groups and groups in my workplace. I am learning how group members interact with one another, and how to be a more effective group member individually. I am also learning about the dynamics between people in groups and how to break or reinforce bad or good patterns of behaviour, respectively.

Although I have to participate in Foundations in Leadership as a part of the BLCS, I would recommend the practicums to anyone! They have helped enhance my relationships in all aspects of my life and helped me become the best leader I can be. And whenever I need a little extra inspiration, there’s always Peter Pan.
