Officers of Instruction in "the Department" for Academic Years 1893/94 – 1930/31

The following four tables were built up out of entries in the University of Chicago Annual Register, following a two step procedure. 

The names of the officers of instruction for the department were listed in the header for calendar listing each year. These names were extracted and an single overall list of instructors was created. This produced a list of 69 names, referring to 70 people. There are two Professor Young's included in the list: Kimball Young and Earle Fiske Young. Because of the scattered structure that resulted when they were treated as a single set, the lists were broken down in to smaller sets, on the basis of the criteria identified.

Officers of Instruction in Sociology With At Least One Listed Course in Sociology refers to the people most commonly associated with the Chicago Department of Sociology. These people had at least one course taught in the Autumn Winter or Spring sessions listed in the calendar. Certain exceptions stand out: Arthur Bentley, Florian Znaniecki, Kimball Young, Earle FiskeYoung, Edwin Sutherland and Halbwach were visiting professors, with course offering spanning more than one term. Howard Woodhead taught an introductory course for Vincent for several years. Clarence Rainwater, whose primary interest was play, was teaching courses in Playground Administration within the department.

Officers of Instruction in Sociology Teaching One or More Courses in Sociology During Summer Session lists the what are most easily thought of as Visiting Professors offering specialized courses in their area of expertise. There is some reason to suspect that this list is incomplete. The 1907-1910 period is empty. Some evidence suggests that in the summer term of 1908, Franz Boas taught in the department. We have not been able to confirm this against University records.

Officers of Instruction in Sociology Listed—No Course Load Identified is a residual category for members of the department teaching introductory sociology, or courses not listed in this section of the catalog, such as courses offered through University College or the University of Chicago Extension Program.. 

Finally Officers of Instruction in the Department Predominantly Anthropologists, provides a list of other professors teaching out of the department. Other than Bemis, an instructor in Political Economy during the three years and Talbot, the head of Sanitary Science, the rest of the instructors were anthropologists, teaching courses in Anthropology.
