University of Chicago Department of Social Science: Recommended Courses Taught by Instructors in Other Departments, 1893–1930

The information in this table was build up through content analysis of course descriptions published in the University of Chicago's Annual Register. As with other tables in this series, "Department of Social Science" is used as a convenient name for the administrative unit that included Sociology, Anthropology and Sanitary Science. As far as this table is concerned, the last inclusion of Anthropology and Sanitary Science has little effect. During the reporting period, no courses of the type documented in the table were listed in the series of documents reviewed.

The table collects together courses taught by instructors from outside the department, recommended to students within the regular listing of the department, but not included as part of the Department's own numbered sequence. Recommended Courses  are distinguished from the Cross-listed Courses  documented elsewhere by the manner in which there were listed. The difference is well-illustrated by the change in reference to Professor Hoben's course "Moral Education and Juvenile Delinquency" offered out of the Education Department. Two entries appeared in the Annual Register (1913-14),  the first classified as a "cross-listed course" (p 161), the second as as "listed course" (165).  Hoben's course appeared again in the Annual Register (1914-15) edition, this time as a "recommended course."
