What is an Archive?
The arrangement of
archival material is based on two principles: provenance and respect for
original order.
The
principle of provenance requires that the collection or fonds of an organization
or person not be combined with those of another. An archives which holds
the records of two theatre companies would not consolidate them even though
both create similar records. This practice is referred to as respect
des fonds or respect for the source or creator.
