Archives collect groups of material created by individuals and organizations. These groups are called collections or fonds.

Since archives collect any medium that records information, collections or fonds may be diverse. They can include letters and diaries, photographs, maps, architectural drawings, computer tape, and video and audio cassettes. The size of a collection or fonds may range from a single document to hundreds or even thousands of metres of material. Increasingly, the Canadian archival profession is using the term fonds rather than collection to refer to the records or papers of a particular individual, institution or organization.
