Directories and published guides to various archives can help you identify the archives you need.

They can be obtained at your library, through the inter-library loan system, or the reference libraries maintained by major archives. Directories and guides list the holdings of individual archives and give information on location, hours of operation, etc., to assist the researcher in deciding which might be of value. The Directory of Canadian Archives, published by the Canadian Council of Archives provides information on more than 800 archives. Its thematic index is a boon to researchers.
