English Language Proficiency

General English Language Policy:

If English (learned and spoken in the home) is not your first language, you must submit evidence of English language proficiency.
Brock University reserves the right to request an English language proficiency test result from any applicant. Teacher Education is a professional program that requires an outstanding command of spoken and written English. You may be required to withdraw from the program if, after admission, you show an inadequate command of the English language.

Official test results must arrive directly from the testing agency on or before December 15, 2014. Under no circumstances will photocopies or test results in the possession of applicants be accepted. Tests should be taken well in advance of the application deadline date, as extensions will not be granted. Test results must be within the last two years (dated between December 15, 2012 and December 15, 2014).

Some applicants include a statement in their application package declaring that all of their university studies were completed in the English language. This statement will not exempt applicants from submitting an English language proficiency test score. However, if you feel strongly that you should not be required to submit a test result, please read the Exemption Requests section of this page.
 

Acceptable Tests and Scores:

  • TOEFL with a minimum of 100 on the IBT (Internet-Based Test) including a minimum of a 27 on Writing and 27 on Speaking
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 7.0 and a writing score of 7.0;
  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) with a minimum score of 90 and a composition score of 83.
  • ITELP (International Test of English Language Proficiency) with a minimum score of 580 and a composition score of 260. (Brock University test)
  • PTE ACADEMIC (Pearson Test of English) with a minimum overall score of 68
     

Exemption Requests:

If you feel strongly that you should not be required to submit a test result, then you must submit a formal request, in writing, for an exemption. The exemption request must arrive on or before December 1, 2014. It is strongly recommended that applicants request an exemption well before the application deadline, since there is no guarantee a request will be approved. If the request is denied, the applicant will be required to submit a successful test result in a timely manner (as determined by the Admissions Office).

 

For those applicants who choose to request an exemption the following documentation, stapled and submitted as one package, must be submitted to Admissions, Office of the Registrar - Attention: English Language Proficiency for Teacher Education:

  1. A statement outlining your reasons for requesting the exemption. Please include your signature at the end of the letter and current contact information.
  2. a letter from a professor or other similarly qualified individual who taught you in a recognized university where the language of instruction is English, or a teacher who taught you in a secondary school where the language of instruction is English, attesting to your speaking, writing, reading and comprehension abilities in the English language.
  3. a photocopy of your educational transcript(s).

Brock University International Test of English Language Proficiency (ITELP):

The ITELP, offered through the International Language Testing Services here at Brock University, is a great option for those individuals considering applying to the Teacher Education program who would like to know if they meet minimum language requirements PRIOR to applying. Applicants who are denied an exemption may also use the services of this office.
