Published on May 13 2013

Brock University is saddened by the death of the Alun Hughes, a retired associate professor of Geography.

Hughes started at Brock in 1969, teaching cartography, surveying, remote sensing and GIS. He also coached Brock’s rugby team. Hughes retired in 2012.

He died Thursday, following a lengthy illness. Hughes was 71.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Hughes’s family and friends at this time.

The family will receive visitors at the Haine Funeral Home and Chapel, 26 Ormond St. South in Thorold on Tuesday, May 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service to celebrate Hughes’s life will be held at Silver Spire United Church, 366 St. Paul St., St. Catharines, on Wednesday, May 15 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, Hughes’s family would appreciate contributions to a fund established in his honour with Brock’s special collections and archives for the acquisition of materials relating to the history of the Niagara Peninsula. Donations can be directed to Brock’s library.
