Published on October 18 2013

This past month the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies (RECL) was on display for international scholars from two different continents – Dr. Sam Elkington from the United Kingdom as well Michel Avila Fernandez from Cuba.

Dr. Samuel Elkington is a Senior Lecturer in Sport Management at the University of Bedfordshire, UK. He visited Brock to gain a 'working' understanding of the pedagogic philosophy of how leisure is taught internationally.

Sam’s visit and research on pedagogic philosophies, approaches and experiences is part of a broader series of visits with various institutions located in Spain, Scotland and the USA.

Dr. Michel Avila Fernandez is the Chair of the Department of Recreation at the University of Physical Culture, Sport and Recreation ‘Manuel Fajardo’ in Havana, Cuba.

Michel and his department have been active partners with the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies since 2009, and have hosted two groups of Brock students in Cuba in 2010 and 2012. His area of focus is the theory and practice of outdoor recreation.
