RECL Community Appreciation Reception (2013 recap)
Published on April 15 2013
The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies hosted the 2013 Community Appreciation Reception, bringing community partners to Brock to celebrate another year of collaborative success.
Over the past academic year, 61 recreation and leisure students participated in fieldwork projects at 44 community agencies. In addition to this, 50 students completed community-based projects in the classroom.
“Matching community partners with the appropriate curriculum increases our efficiency and effectiveness to help align student engagement with community needs” Says Janet Zanutto, who is the Coordinator of Experiential Learning in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies.
“The reception is important because it gives us a chance to formally thank our community partners. Their participation as student supervisors and content experts is an invaluable enhancement to student learning.”
In many cases, the program makes a full-circle with recreation and leisure alumni re-engaging with the community learning experience as supervisors for current students.
“We wouldn’t be the same organization without these students” Says Jordan Clark, Recreation and Leisure Studies Alumnus (2010) and Program Coordinator for the PowerHouse Project.
“Students have a lot to offer, our student this year (Katie Fairweather) got to develop programming for young carers (care givers) between the ages 5 - 18, and positively advocate on behalf of the agency to promote the well-being of young carers”
The Powerhouse Project is a non-profit agency that provides services and activities for young carers to empower these kids, to be just that, Kids.
Community partners in attendance at the reception also included:
