Vocal Music combined with ORFF music training and certification for Primary-Junior classroom teachers is just one of the many unique AQ’s being offered by the Centre for Continuing Teacher Education

Published on October 10 2013

Teaching, like any profession, requires continuous development, both of one’s personal and professional skills.

The Centre for Continuing Teacher Education in Brock University’s Faculty of Education offers a wide array of Additional Qualification (AQ) courses, from French as Second language or Mandarin as an International Language to Librarianship or Vocal Music with Orff-Schulwerk training and just about everything in-between.
The Centre offers a specialized Vocal Music Part 1 course with Orff Certification for Primary/Junior.

This unique combination AQ course is accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers aligned with the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Arts Curriculum for K-8 Music. The EDUC 9F14 Vocal Music with Orff AQ course combines the world renowned Orff music method for children with the standard Vocal Music P/J curriculum in a unique offering that is only one of three such courses available across the province.

The face to face interaction the course offers emphasizes and explores student music literacy, performance and creativity using songs, stories, games, rhythms, dance and poetry.

The Orff Method is a way of teaching children about music that engages their mind and bodies through a mixture of singing, dancing, acting and the use of percussion instruments (i.e. xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels). It is also designed to teach children about music on a level that they can easily comprehend.
Musical concepts are learned through singing, chanting, dance, movement, drama and the playing of percussion instruments. Improvisation, composition and a child's natural sense of play are encouraged.

The Vocal Music ORFF AQ classes and workshops are taught by two incredibly talented and driven instructors: Lori Moccio and Jane Wamsley.

Lori Moccio has a Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Education from Brock University. She is an Orff Specialist and a certified Orff instructor with Carl Orff Canada.
She teaches Gr. 1 French Immersion for the District School Board of Niagara where she passionately integrates the arts into all she teaches.

She sits on the Arts Team for the DSBN and helps to create initiatives that promote the teaching of the Arts. Lori also teaches AQ music courses at Brock University. A passionate, energetic, and enthusiastic teacher, Lori loves sharing the Orff approach with others.

Jane Wamsley holds an Honours Bachelor of Music (Organ and Church Music) from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto. Jane is a retired elementary music teacher and arts coordinator.

She is currently Director of Music at Christ Church United, Mississauga and an instructor in the Teacher Education program in the Faculty of Education at Brock University. Jane is also the author of several music education publications as well as an avid music education promoter through her work as a workshop leader, festival adjudicator, speaker, curriculum writer and board member of the Ontario Music Educators’ Association.
