Status of Campus Elevators

Notification of Upcoming Bridge Replacements and Road Closures - Niagara Region - Starting Monday March 30, 2015

Please be advised that Brock University has received notification that phased work to replace two Regional Municipality of Niagara bridges will be undertaken during the period commencing Monday March 30th, 2015 and continuing through to August 2016. With information also provided at the Public Information Centre, held Monday March 30, 2015, the bridges to be replaced, along with their dates of closure, are: A. Beaverdams Road Bridge: Road 67 (Beaverdams Road, east of Highway 406) will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the bridge from April 6, 2015 to August 2015. B. Power Canal Bridge: Road 50 (Merrittville Highway, west of Highway 406 and immediately south of Decew Road) will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the bridge from August 2015 until August 2016. The Region has identified detour routes that can be used during the closure periods for both bridges and those routes will be signed by the Region accordingly. Earth Hour 2015 - Saturday, March 28th 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm

Earth Hour is this Saturday, March 28th, from 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm. http://www.earthhour.org/ On Saturday March 28, 2015, Brock University will help support efforts towards a sustainable future by participating in Earth Hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Leading the way this year, the lights illuminating the bronze statue of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock in front of Schmon Tower will be turned off for the hour. In addition to the lights around the Main Campus Entrance sign being turned off, Facilities Management, Parking Services, and Campus Security Services will be turning off all lights in parking lots T, U & V. Other areas of the University will be reducing lighting where possible, including the Cairns Family Health & Bioscience Research Complex, while taking into consideration occupant and public safety. The Residence Life Staff’s Environment Committee is hosting a campfire at the Alphie’s fire pit, to coincide with Earth Hour. Staff, faculty and students are invited to help out by switching off all unnecessary lighting within their areas during this time, however, please ensure that it is safe to do so and that no candles are used. Facilities Management continues to examine and implement new initiatives for the ongoing conservation of energy, while recognizing personal safety.

Notification of Unplanned Hot Water Shutdown - Plaza Building - Friday March 27, 2015

Please be advised that on Thursday March 26th, 2015, a problem occurred with the domestic hot water that services Plaza Building. An emergency repair was initiated yesterday resulting in the hot water to the building being shutdown. The damage to the hot water heating system was unrepairable and new parts are enroute to replace the defective equipment. Cold water to sinks and toilets will not be affected. An update will be sent out as more information becomes available.

Update: Notification of Entrance Closure - Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex

Please be advised that contractor work for replacement of the 4 east entrance doors will not completed by the end of February as originally scheduled due to unforeseen problems with the construction of the doors that is hindering replacement. The entrance is currently closed and is anticipated to remain closed until late March. Updates will be sent out as the work progresses. Access to the building, including accessible access, continues to remain available via the north and south entrances of the building. The east end doors will be unavailable for emergency exit until the work is completed. Three emergency exits can be found on the north side of the building, two in stairwell A and one in stairwell B. **Reminder*** Planned Electrical Shut Down - Group C Planned Buildings - May 8th, 2015

To ensure a reliable electrical distribution to the Brock University Main Campus, Facilities Management is planning an electrical shut down for the following buildings: • Welch Hall, • Scotiabank Hall, • South Block, • Walker Complex, • Taro Hall, • Student-Alumni Centre, • Plaza Building, • Lowenberger Residence, • Village Residence, • Kenmore Centre, • Harrison Hall , • Theal House, • D Lot Parking Kiosk This shut down will take place Friday, May 8th, 2015 starting at 10:00 p.m. and will be completed by Saturday, May 9th 2015 at 10:00 a.m. This shut down will allow for repairs and preventative maintenance on our electrical infrastructure in order to feed and sustain power to our growing University. No other areas on campus are scheduled to be impacted during this time. Failure to properly maintain electrical infrastructure could lead to extensive damage and/or fire in a fault condition. Facilities Management is committed to providing a reliable and safe power system for the university and community. The second weekend in May through to 2022 has been chosen to conduct this work when demand and occupancy is at its lowest. On these dates only buildings in the group are scheduled to be impacted. Notification of Contractor Work - Mackenzie Chown D Block - Starting Wednesday February 11, 2015

As part of the Mackenzie Chown Fire Alarm Replacement Project, contractors will be working throughout the Mackenzie Chown Complex to install a new fire alarm system and decommission/remove the old system. Contractors will be working overnight (Monday through Thursday) from 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. starting Wednesday February 11, 2015 on all floor levels of Mackenzie Chown D Block. Work will continue in D block for approximately 8 weeks (until Mid-April 2015). Subsequent notices will advise when work progresses to other blocks within the Complex.

Notification of Contractor Work in Mackenzie Chown - Beginning Monday, January 12, 2015

As part of the Mackenzie Chown Fire Alarm Replacement project, please be advised that over the next 9 months, contractors will be working throughout the Mackenzie Chown Complex to install a new fire alarm system and decommission/remove the old system.
Crews will be working overnight (Monday through Thursday) from 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. Two crews will be working in A Block and B Block over the next 4 weeks, before progressing into other blocks. A third crew will be working over the next 5 months on fire alarm network equipment terminating in C Block. Subsequent notices will advise when work progresses to other blocks within the Complex.

Unplanned Disruption of Service - Print Shop Freight Elevator

Please be advised that the Print Shop freight elevator is out of service until further notice due to a TSSA (Technical Standards & Safety Authority) mandated elevator upgrade. An update will be sent via email as information becomes available.

Information Regarding Cluster Flies - Schmon Tower

Every spring and fall the occupants in the Schmon Tower notice an increase of flies. These flies are Cluster flies and they typically live outdoors. In the fall they migrate towards warmth and in the spring they attempt to return to the outdoors. These flies are different than the house fly which consumes trash and debris. They do not carry disease and are not in the building due to poor housekeeping, but are seeking warmth. Their larvae consume earth worms to survive and adults feed on plant material. As such, these flies do not multiply while they are indoors.

Repair work to the exterior caulking and window sealing to help prevent the immigration of the flies has been identified on the University’s Deferred Maintenance list, but the work is not anticipated to start this year. In the meantime, Custodial Services will be cleaning the window sills in the Schmon Tower on a routine basis. Per discussions with Health, Safety & Wellness, fly treatment will not be applied. The cluster flies have a short life span and the solution only shortens their life span by a day. Fly strips are available upon request by contacting Facilities Management Customer Service at facilities.management@brocku.ca
