Accessibility Initiative - Areas of Refuge - Main Campus
Posted November 18, 2013
Since the beginning of July 2013, Facilities Management, in cooperation with the Emergency Preparedness and Life Safety Office, Information and Technology Services, and the University Accessibility (AODA) Coordinator, has been working on a life safety and accessibility initiative related to the designation of 50 Areas of Refuge in various locations across campus. An "Area of Refuge" is a location in a building designed to hold occupants during a fire or other emergency, when immediate evacuation may not be safe or possible. Occupants can wait there until rescued or relieved by firefighters. Areas of refuge are designated EXIT stairs and each Area of Refuge is identified by signage and is furnished with an emergency phone and or red fire phone. This initiative was designed to meet the Brock University Facility Accessibility Design Standards and now is fully complete.

Information Regarding Cluster Flies – Schmon Tower
Posted October 17, 2013
Every fall the occupants in the Schmon Tower notice an increase of flies. These flies are Cluster flies and they typically live outdoors, but at this time of year they migrate towards warmth. These flies are different than the House fly which consumes trash and debris. They do not carry disease and are not in the building due to poor housekeeping, but are seeking warmth. Their larvae consume earth worms to survive and adults feed on plant material. As such, these flies do not multiply while they are indoors.
Repair work to the exterior caulking and window sealing to help prevent the immigration of the flies has been identified on the University’s Deferred Maintenance list, but the work is not anticipated to start this year. In the meantime, Custodial Services will be cleaning the window sills in the tower on a routine basis in the fall.
With discussions with HR-EHS, fly treatment will not be applied this year. The cluster flies have a short life span and the solution only shortens their life span by a day. Fly strips are available upon request by contacting Facilities Management Customer Service at email@example.com.
If you have any comments please contact Bryan Cober, Structural Services Manager at 3290 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
