Brock students attend conference for outdoor education

Recreation and Leisure students had the opportunity to present at the Horwood Conference on Outdoor Education.

As an inaugural conference, the Horwood conference was hosted at Queen's University on January 25-26, 2013.

The conference made a big impact on students, providing fourth year undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to attend and present.

“The conference was a great learning experience for our students to get out and share their knowledge, but it was also a way to expose them to other aspects of outdoor education that they were not so familiar with, ” said Ryan Howard, PhD student in Applied Health Sciences and event organizer for Brock University students.

“Our undergraduate students were able to present on what they had learned throughout their four years of studies. Our graduate students had the opportunity to share the research they had been working on to present and get feedback.”

All fourth year undergraduate attendees from Brock’s outdoor recreation concentration took part in delivering workshop presentations at the conference.

Students presented on a range of topics including: mitigating risk in personal and group expeditions, the importance of food and nutrition within expedition planning, integrating environmental awareness into group expeditions, and expedition behaviour and communication in group expeditions.

The new event was student organized, attracting students studying environmental and outdoor education, health and physical education, outdoor recreation, adventure leadership, experience-based learning and other related fields.

In addition to the undergraduate participation, Liz Kirk, Hilary Sayle, and Ryan Howard who are all graduate students studying leisure studies in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, delivered a variety of research-based presentations at the conference.

Students received a considerable amount of positive feedback and appreciation from visiting scholars, faculty and peers for their dedicated effort, professionalism, level of detail and confidence shown during both their presentation and participation at the conference.
