Tabitha Vercillo was selected as one of eight recipients of the 2013 Peg Connolly Scholarship sponsored by the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).
Student members of ATRA from universities across Canada and the United States applied for the opportunity to attend ATRA’s Annual Conference held late September in Pittsburgh, PA.
“I am honoured to represent Brock University on an international level.” Says Tabitha.
“It’s a great opportunity to learn about the field of therapeutic recreation from another perspective and share the knowledge I have learned from the faculty at Brock.”
Scholarships were awarded to students who had conducted outstanding work throughout their academic paths and demonstrated ambition and enthusiasm for the therapeutic recreation profession.
As an MA student in Applied Health Sciences with a concentration in leisure studies, Tabitha’s thesis investigates “The Role of Leisure in Posttraumatic Growth in Cancer Patients”.
“The award is a great honour and the conference will be a great experience for Tabitha.” Noted Sanghee Chun, who is Tabitha’s thesis supervisor and associate professor in Recreation & Leisure Studies.
“Not only will she learn from the conference sessions, but she will get to network with professionals.”
The “working scholarship” provides students with networking opportunities and hands on experience, as students will assist in various aspects of implementing the conference.
